World championship of adult lawn darts - Eclipse edition

The World championship of adult lawn darts was battled out in the waning moments of the 2017 eclipse. After a couple of ranging shots, the two finalists were ready to duel it out in a "best of 3" match.

Round 1
Invictus came out of the gate strong with the win in round one, taking the early lead.

Round 2
Not to be out done, SAFN came back in the second round with a solid winning shot to tie up the match.

Round 3
All the fans sat on the edge of their seats for the final, deciding round of the match. Invictus shot first with what looked to be the probable winning shot, but then SAFN stepped to the firing line. Bang cracked the rifle and the trajectory looked beautiful. From the firing line, both competitors thought SAFN's final shot had likely taken the victory.

After walking downrange for grenade retrieval/scoring in the final, Invictus' grenade had planted solidly, well within a "close enough for grenades" score, but SAFNs grenade had bounced and the impact divot could not be found in the tall grass. After several minutes of searching, after walking back and forth from the firing line numerous times to retrieve grenades, in the hot sun, in high humidity, both competitors decided "pizz on this" and called it a draw.

Retiring back to chairs in the shade with a cool beverage, both competitors were named Co-winners of the World Championship of lawn darts - eclipse edition

Not seen in the foreground of the pic are 2 dead American Eagles, a turkey vulture, and 3 blue jays.
Really enjoyed our visit ~ss&Mrs.ss

The only reason it was even close was because I forgot my calibrated grenade sight gas plug and spotting scope.....

Great time all around.

I told my gun friends about this competition and they all thought it was an awesome idea!

Nice. What were you using for grenade blanks?

The rifle grenades we both used and are in the photo are Izzy 5.56 practice grenades which are lighter weight than the actual 7.62 rifle grenades.

I used Brit L13A1 blanks which will throw this type of grenade most of 100 yards.

SAFN used a different blank (I forget what he called it) which can throw one at least 150 yards, but still not full power.

Using these blanks and this light weight grenade you can fire it from the shoulder with no drama.

Actual 7.62 grenade launching blanks are (A) much more expensive (B) will throw them 250 yards or more to find & retrieve (C) you are well advised to plant the riFAL butt in the ground as they can break your shoulder - LOL. I do not remember which, but either the Brit or the Izzy training manual specifically stated to plant the riFAL butt in the ground and not fire it from the shoulder.

Dave is much more well versed on rifle grenades than I am and can elaborate in much more detail if he sees this and you still have questions.

For me, the Izzy 5.56 grenade with the L13A1 blank and the 100 yard walk each way for retrieval is perfect

I was using Austrian L31A1 blanks, it's the way to go. Easy 65 to 100 yard shots from the shoulder.

I used a U.S. M82 blank with an Izzy grenade once, just once, in a FR-8 planted on the ground. It went every bit of 250 yards before hitting a tree and bouncing to the left, otherwise it would have left the range and probably would never have been found. That damn thing looked like an Estes rocket going up. It probably went at least 300 feet in the air and would have gone 300 yards down range.

I'll weigh my Energa grenade vs the Izzy's and let you guys know.

I tried the Brit L13A1 blanks with a couple Energa grenades I had and they "maybe" went 30-ish yards. 40 max. I did not weigh them, but they were pretty pathetic with the L13A1 blanks
