Interesting Polytech M14s

Bought this 10+ years ago from a Jarhead who shot it in some type of military competitions. I know his father they are both legit Jarheads.

Anyways, I recently bought a second M1A kit and I'm considering what to have Tim at Warbirds build for me so I got this piece out of the safe for closer scrutiny (just shamelessly bragging that I have 2 M1A kits nearly complete (missing only a barrel) to send off) TRW bolt, unknown op rod (I can't get it off) [TWSS], barrel is marked "308 WIN 8 95" it's blued and looks like a HB to me.

The stock it is in now is a glass bedded very wide stock with a nearly vertical grip. I imagine it's within some competition classification of some sort or another.

Also note the log book. I failed to keep it up but I can say I fired less than 60 rounds through it since I bought it in 2003 or 2004. Round count on the log book was 1904.

Any thoughts?

Very nice. Somebody loved that rifle. Added rear lug and heavy match barrel. Op rod looks to be Chinese because of the connector cut. A gem indeed.

Got the op rod off. What I see says "4 GR 10 308 WIN 8 95 1" They look somewhat crudely stamped near the breech. Barrel is blued and I do NOT believe it is chrome lined. Op rod is unmarked but highly polished (see log book).

Any idea of barrel manufacturer?

STOP! WAIT! DO THIS! Do not mess with that rifle. The round count is only half-way (maybe) for a non-chrome-lined barrel. The op-rod is a Chinee one, but completely functional. The bolt has already been changed and obviously someone welded a rear lug on it, so leave it alone.

DO THIS! If anything, you can keep this one a s competition gun, if you bother, but the I would change the handguard out to one without the mess in the front at the band and the rear. You could get a scopemount (SADLAK), scope, a rising cheekpiece and make it a scoped M-14 clone.

With your other M-14 kit, get an LRB receiver and make another M-14 clone. Then you will have two great rifles.

I have (3) M-14 kits, but I need the bling to get (3) LRB receivers. The M-14 kits out there need to be revived into M-14 clones, just like all the FAL kits. You can help with this mission by turning your kit into another one and just using that Polytech too.

Forget about using the M-14 as a competition gun unless you just want to shoot for fun and know that unless everyone else at the match is blind you aren't going to win shit. The modern AR-15 variants and worse, the AR-10 family are going to shoot circles around you. But do not despair, the M-14 is still a graceful old lady, even thought she is a graceful old lady dinosaur. She is still fine to behold and feels good in your hands.

Also, get a screw to put back int eh screw hole on the right side of the receiver. You don't NEED to do it, but it will look better if that hole was filled.

Your serial number is only a few numbers away from my Polytech IIRC. It shoots as good, if not better, as any S.A. of Geneseo standard and NM model. Clean it, maybe refinish it or get it cryogenically treated, but there isn't a whole lot you can do to that rifle you have to make it much better.

Even though some incredible pieces have come from rarely good gunsmiths, I realize the modern day AR 10 can easily outshoot the M1A. I have an OBR and there is no question about that. I prefer iron sites. The M1A has a great feel and is the last of the great full sized battle rifles that rides in wooden furniture and that's enough for me.

Measured the TE and it came out as 3. No idea what it started as and if you know these measurements this reading doesn't say much. Reject is 10.

Even brand new barrels can have TE readings all over the spectrum. TE would generally only apply to USGI barrels as a reference only. Don't get hung up on it.
ME on the other had would be applicable to all barrels.

The barrel is not chromium plated. It's a Gene Barnett barrel from a Douglas blank.

side marked Polly rear lugged with NM rear sight the op rod is one piece forged chic com like a trw or sak wra hrn & sa were two piece welded that forged receiver is the closest to gi spec you will get , I wonder if the gas system has been glued and screwed or if its welded to make it nm ,if you got it from marines the front band is most likely welded as that is the way the usmc did it the army screw and glued them

the stock sounds like a Mc Millan I love to see a photo of it , careful not to mess the glass beding by removing the receiver too much

very very nice rifle I would not change a thing

Brother eyegun. Definitely leave that rifle alone until the barrel is completely shot out, ten put a new one on it. And, build the other two kits into two more M-14 clones. Pick a proven M-14mith to put them together though. An excellent smith with used parts is more important to have than a barge full of mint TRW steel and some gimbo to ruin them all for you.

Pretty much sums up competition for me these days anyway.
