Mag well engraving ..new pics

So I contacted Firearm Engraving today to get my Venezuelan coat of arms on my mag well. They will do the Venezuelan and Cuban engraving for under $100 for the two..shipped. I used slow cat's name to get my 15% discount, and they waived the FFL charges. Turnaround time is about a week they said.

I talked to Cole.

I told him to expect more orders coming.
It all seemed very reasonable to me and he said he could engrave it as deep as I wanted it.

Will they do barreled actions? This is the question. Most barreled actions are going to have already been refinished in the correct finish. The crest would then be 'correct' engraved into the fresh finish, the way a new rifle just arriving in country from the manufacturer would be.

Not trying to bust chops, but an important detail for a detail oriented bunch.

Dean, along those same lines, are you going to re finish your receivers before you have them engraved? Also, do you happen to know if they have the Irsaeli crest available? I'm thinking the Israeli, Cuban, Brasilian and Argentine might be popular.

All you have to do is send them a picture...if they don't have it it's $15 extra.
But then again they did not have the Cuban crest and waived the $15 fee because they figured they would get more orders. And the shipping was the flat rate $20.

I wasn't sure how deep their engraving was so I painted my receiver before shipping it..but after talking to him you can get it as deep as you want.
I never asked if they would do barreled actions or not. But by looking at their website it looks like they do just about anything.

I don't think they do barreled receivers but that could change I guess....if they go deeper the better....mine was pretty shallow....I was scared that if it got blasted it may get blasted off....moot point now as the dsa I was gonna use is out of spec....

Oh, this is where THAT came from. Ok. Yeah I've seen one of these and the example I saw WAS nice, but so shallow that I think it would have blasted off during refinish. Again, a moot point if it had been a finished barreled action, or a receiver were complete rifle refinish was not an issue for the owner.

When Pat (SLR500) engraved the Israeli crest in Coonan Receiver. he had to level out the magwell lighting cut in order to engrave it as the casting was not "level", i told him no problem as the rifle was going to be refinished,

Not knowing how Pat did the engraving This might be a issuse with other engravers.

I will post some pictures when I get them back.... they are going out tomorrow. I went with Coonan, so my magwell is already machined.

One thing he did say:

The deeper the cut, the wider it cuts also.

I think I'm gonna acid etch the crest on my upper for the Cuban build. Might even do the tiny eagle by the hinge pin on my BGS uppper.

Well here's what I got.
The Cuban ended up bigger than the proof he sent me to approve, so he ended up knocking off 45.00
Otherwise it think they are great.

I told him I was painting them so he went quite a bit deeper... I think I will do one more coat to get rid of the cutter cuts.

Theres probably a lot of Venezuelans that would trade you a crate full of real ones for a couple boxes of toilet paper.

I agree! The man definitely has FAL addiction issues. In a good way, of course...

You are about a month ahead of me. But I won't have too much time off for another month any way. I can't wait for some time to hit the range! I haven't been out shooting in 5 months....

It went from 1 to 3 and is now 7. These babies are producing like rabbits.

There is one more build that I would like to do. I would like to build a M1 around that barrel I got from you.

Looking good, Dean! Those are gonna turn out beautiful. The Cuban crest is a little big but that wouldn't bother me any.

Got a pic of the Cuban with paint?

He said he can engrave with the barrel on, no problem.

I will post pictures this weekend of the Cuban receiver painted.

Yeah, I guess I have to own that, probably a little more than "mildly addicted". I'm waiting on wood from Blue Monster, some receivers and time to do refinishing, and I'll have another 10 ready to screw together....

Now Dean has started his addiction right. Some of the most rare variants right off the bat! Between the early Israeli, a Cuban, and a Venezuelan, he pretty much has the "Hen's Teeth" club complete.

Likely the short curved beak. I think they were trying to keep away from the longer Nazi WWII Adler.

Yes, it is Duracoat. I buy their 4oz. Black Oxide and add 3- 1/4 tsps. Tactical white and 1- 1/4 tsp. flattening agent.
It matches perfect to the FALO I have for color.

Nice. I never thought about adding white. I've been playing with Black Oxide and Gun Blue to see if I can come up with a convincing gun blue like the early FAL's. If I recall, LaC had a BGS done that way that came out great.

I believe you are correct there, although I don't think I have ever seen pictures of a trials rifle close enough to see if it was marked or not. Beautiful either way. I won't be engraving my trials kit. Not sure about my other early build, I need to research some more.....it never ends!

Yeah I don't think my Cuban will look as nice as that. I am still toying with sending the receiver to be engraved.

Flypaper: Please reattach you web UK type sling so the open ends of the "hooks" face out so the nice wood will not get gouged or scratched by them. Thanks. l2a3

I actually gave it some thought before I put it on.
The way I did it I thought was going to be the kindest on the wood .
When are the hooks are out the rivers will rub... there much sharper.

I'm not sure which way is correct.

I do appreciate you looking out for my wood.
