WiFi Question

So I broke down and bought a laptop for my trip to Washington last month.

I need to ask a stupid question.

How do I get wifi at my house? I want to be able to use the laptop in my garage when I'm working on my motorcycle. I made twenty trips between my house and the garage today. It got annoying quick.

Can't you just work on the motorcycle in the house?

You will need a wireless router. You should be able to get one for about $60. connect router to modem, follow directions, and 10 minutes later....WIRELESS!

You'll need a router to deliver the WiFi if you don't already have one.

If you use Comcast or have some other Broad Band provider they might
install the router. I had to go by one and the provider hooked it up.

What type of internet service do you have?

I just bought one last night for the very same reason!

Linsys N300

It says it will handle 3 devices so when the family comes over, they can play. Also, when the daughter gets her new tablet in a few days (birthday gift), she can get online as well. $79.00 and I had it hooked up and working in less than 10 mins. And, I am no computer guy to say the least. Named it "FBI surveillance van"!!

Kroberts,

Are you on cable or DSL for your internet service provider?

Assuming you have one or the other, you just buy a wireless router.
The technology for wireless routers constantly changes.
The price does not.
A good one costs $100.
Pay less at your peril.

A VPN does NOTHING for a LAN... I dont think you understand what it means.
VPN=Virtual Private Network.
Its a way to remotely (meaning away from your house, like at work or traveling) connect securely to your network through encryption..Kinda like using wireless security to setup your wireless network at home....
Newsflash!!! Most modern routers out of teh box have encrypted comms as standard!!!!

Guys if you dont know, ask someone who does.Posting incorrect information is a bad thing and confuses people... I am a network engineer and designed, engineered and implemented the network we used to fight the GWOT for 3 years, and went with CENTCOM HQ to Trashghanistan and set up a "LAN in a CAN" in a cave HQ. 20+ years experience.
It drives me nuts to see completely incorrect advice and terminology..

Modern TV's are nothing more than glorified laptops.

They all have computers in them, and a wireless card.

So, anything that you can get through your DSL or cable modems can be pumped to a wireless router, and watched on any modern TV that is within signal-range.

You just gotta click through some options (including the password to your wireless router) with the TV's remote control.
Do NOT lose that remote. You can forget about walking up to the TV and "clunking" through "the channels" anymore these days."

Cable companies and phone companies can supply you with a "Gateway". A wireless gateway is a wireless, router and a modem in one. You Time Warner bill probably charges you for their moden. Call them up and have thm change it out to a wireless gateway. Also, these gateways tend to have a little bit more wirless power to them than the wireless routers do. Most company wireless gateway are typically 100mw of power while the off the shelf router has 35mw of power.

When you buy a router, as others have said, it is reasonably simple to hook up. Connect the ethernet cable from your modem to the router and if you are lucky, you are mostly done (you can also, of course, hard-connect nearby computers to the router via ethernet cable).

Re: range and speed, I understand that a "G" router (i.e.http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ) handles interference a bit better, but a newer "N" has better speed and range.

Obviously enable security and choose a password whatever you choose. Plenty of YouTube videos showing how to set-up of common routers.

Other considerations: Through the "Mac Cloning" feature of Linksys modems (and probably brands), I like that I have the ability to permanently change my IP address - and I try to do so at least every year or so. Also, when I name a network, I tend to add "_nomap" at the end - Google may ignore this and map the WiFi point anyway, but why not? See: http://money.cnn.com/2011/11/15/technology/google_wifi/

Don't spend money on a brand new router, check ebay you buy a used router for a very small price.

I got WOW cable and they were charging $5/month to rent a modem from them, I purchased a modem with a built in wireless router for $15 on ebay, returned their modem. Killed two birds with one stone.

Just call Warner first and ask if you can do it. I think any modem that works with cable (Comcast, WOW, Warner etc.) should work. Once you get the router just call your internet provider give them the mac address from the new router and voila !

Most people do the all in one router/switch/wifi, but if you already happen to have a wired router/switch you could just add a wifi access point! Not that it would save you any money, but it would be a bit easier to install.

Then you are "renting" their modem. Call them up and have them change it out for a wireless one. I believe they use a 65mw gateway. It shoud have enough power to connect to you garage.
