post-korean war M-1 accessories
i have a post-korean war M-1 coming from CMP (a NICE H&R!) and would like to collect up a complete set of CORRECT, rather than "will fit stuff", accessories for it.
does anyone have a complete list of all the stuff that goes with the M-1? (for example, what flash hider is correct? which ammo belt? etc?) for dixie,sw

Know what you mean aboutthe new rifle. I picked up a IHC the other day and it turns out that it is in the supposed 1100-1500 group that is hard to find--had no idea until today.
So far ihave picked up a combo tool, cleaning kit (m10), bowie uncut bayo, a M5A1 bayo (Korea through VietNam), web sling, en blocks, manual, and aWWII pull through. Now I want to find a belt, and some other things. I got to say, the Garand is my second favorite rifle--FAL is first!-- and they have such a history behind them. Enjoy! |

I might. I bought a very late H&R and a very late S.A. from CMP in 2000. Both had little use before being stored and were lovely rifles. The H&R went to a good friend, I till have the S.A.
Both are post-Korea production. I would like to pick up a few correct accessories, like a sling and cartridge belt.

As far as I know, the only flash hider used on the M1 Garand was on the sniper versions,
a cone shaped attachment. You might also want to pick up a grenade launcher, and a grenade launcher sight ( I would NOT install the sight tho)These are found really cheap on eBay. The original ten pocket canvas web belt in good condition is getting hard to find and very pricey..There are some reproductions that look like them on the market..but are not 'real'. There are two kinds of chamber tools/one is the brush kind and the other is the slotted patch kind. |

Since Korea is in the mix, don't forget your winter trigger. Neat little device that lets you shoot with your mitts on.
There were two types of flash hiders, the cone made by Hart and the T=37 which kinda looks like an early M16 prong type, but these were used only on the M1C and M1D versions. Don't try and use the Numrich M1D base and rings if you're gonna try and recreate an M1D though, compared to the real thing they're crap. Don't forget bandoleers for carrying ammo. And the little greasecups (available from Tapco), and a buttstock cleaning kit, postwar variety. Then there will the challange of findin the correct parts, barrel, and stock to make your rifle correct, since a service grade won't be or it would be a collector grade. Have fun! Next to FAL's Garands are the best. |

folks,
my uncle was a greek civil war/korean war/dom rep/congo/rvn paratrooper, with 82d ABN & 11th Air Assault. busy fellow,he! he says the flash hiders/scoped M-1s WERE issued to a bunch of folks OTHER THAN snipers, BUT does not know if the issue was "official" OR if it was "5 finger discount" by the units- GIs are really GOOD at "scrounging" if the item will possibly save their life! for dixie,sw

Soumoj275,
also, i can't resist bragging on my good fortune-talked to a CMP armourer person this PM-was told that i'm getting a "re-built but never re-issued" "Danish" Winchester M-1, with NEW V.A.R. barrel, within 2 weeks! was also told the stock is "well figured". YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! now, if i could just hit the lottery! ROTFLMAO. for dixie,sw

The rifles are kept at and shipped from Anniston AL. They send blocks of rifle serial numbers up to the Port Clinton, Ohio facility for assignment to buyers. I'm curious, just which armorer did you talk with? The personnel at Anniston should not be able to connect specific rifles with individuals unless you "know" someone. And THAT should not be happening according to the CMP!

Sumoj275,
how well i understand THAT! were it not for having >$25K in my lady's college bills STILL to pay i would have MANY M-1s- there a NOT a lot of CMP ones left-expect the price to JUMP HIGH, when that supply is exhausted! & i WANT @least 4 more before that happens! (i'm old enough to remember when M-1 carbines were $ 16.50 through the old DCM! look what a carbine costs NOW!) for dixie,sw |

I dont think the CMP tells you what manufacturer you will be receiving in advance, Its kinda like the luck of the draw.
Do you know something we dont? If you can ask for what you want in advance get me a M1D... Hope you get a good shooter, post an update when you go to the range...
