A Work In Progress
So, here's a little project I've been working on recently. It's made from a 1 1/2" chisel I found in a scrapyard. I forged the shape of the point, and some of the bevel (not terribly good with that part yet). I was sanding the bevel, and got a little carried away; just handling it, it sliced right through my glove, so I sanded the edge off. Now I've got to weld something up for a tang (there wasn't any to speak of when I got it), then harden, temper, and sand/sharpen again. I plan to leave it a little rough looking though, so only the edge will be sharp and polished. The edge as it is now is a hairs length over 4.5".
Happy 4th. ![]()

Chisel steel ought to be good.. Without looking I don't recall the steel #. Good luck and enjoy!

So Carl...howz the steel "feel"? YA think it will hold edge? How did it forge for ya?
Some chisels of age are laminates, some are straight hi carbon steel. MOst generic, plain steel chisels commonly available ..I don;t think they'd be suitable...unless ya carbonize during forging. They're too soft and don;t hold edge well over their length. Oughta know, as I've ruin't enuff ovvum! ![]() Interested in progress reports. Paul

I'm forging in a coal burning forge, so there would be some "carbonizing". I'm pretty sure its all high carbon steel anyways, it sparkles a fair amount if sanded. It was pretty tough "feeling" when forging, definitely not like mild steel. Tommorrow I will forge weld on the rest of the tang. More progress reports to comd.
