I think it was 60 Minutes but there was an interview with the leader of Qatar. His country apparently armed the rebels in Libya with FALs to take down Ghadafi. It wouldn't surprise me if he gives them to the Syrian rebels too based on his comments.

This may be heresy on the files but these Syrian gunmen would probably be better off with AKs:

easier ammo availabilty,
less recoil,
3 foot long rifle vs 4 foot long rifle,
controllable full auto.

To take the example of the guy riding on the back of the motorbike, if he had to fire from there at a group of opponents standing on a street corner he'd be better off with an AK or machine pistol.

That website tracking Belgian fals has some very interesting info. It's probably no coincidence that this unauthorized proliferation issue is getting publicity just as the UN arms trade treaty is debated.
