FN 49 Kits

Does anyone out ther have any experience with the FN 49 kits for sale by CHL corporation? Supposedly they are pretty much complete except for the complete triggergaurd. Thinking about making a purchase.

I have heard from a couple of people that they are in pretty sad condition. I think these were some of rifles that had the select fire trigger packs. I think SARCO ended up with all the trigger packs ($125) each.

Also, hunters lodge is notorious for selling items in much worse condition than advertised. Customer sevice is lousy, too. Buyer beware.

I agree with all of the above. I've heard mostly poor reports on these kits. I did hear of 1 or 2 people that were reasonably satisfied BUT they got in early and maybe got "better" kits, that were missing only a few small parts, which were available from Northridge, Numrich, or Sarco. That was quite a while ago and it seems that it's pretty much bottom of the barrel now.

Sledgehammer Sarco was selling the select fire trigger groups more than 15 years ago - they were probably removed from Belgian-contract rifles. They may have ended up with the TG assys from these kits too BUT I've had NO reports of any select fire Egyptians.

The only good reports you will find on Hunters lodge, would be person to person sales at gun shows. Mail order, they are scumbags. They try to hide behind their new name of CHL.
15 or so years back when Sarco started selling the auto trigger housings they could not sell you the complete unit without breaking BATF rules on parts count & or intent at that time. What they are selling now I don't have a clue.
A select fire 30/06 FN49 at 9.50 lbs with a 10 rd mag, would not be my choice of weapon.

Joe Poyer published a 66 page book on the "SAFN 49 Battle Rifle". 50 pages of it was actually on the FN49. 6 pages of it was singing the praises of the SKS & the SVT 40 & the other 10 pages were singing the praises of the FNFAL. That should tell you something! I never made a damn dime by living in the past! Somewhere, somehow, I keep thinking someone is trying to resusitate (the confederacy) the FN49! It's already too damn high, wore out, there's not much demand for it & it's been dead for 50 years. You take your life in your own hands shooting it! The granddaddy of the FAL, that's right! They finally perfected the FNFAL & 3/4 of the world followed! (My rant for the day!)

Dean, Dean, buddy... run out of Proszac?

A lot of the "progress" we see is not so much perfection but cost containment. The FAL is obsolete too judging from the fact that we are buying cut-up surplus guns and most of the world has moved on. This is the FALfiles, after all, are we not "living in the past?". Shouldn't it be the AUGfiles, FN2000files, ARfiles... etc?

Some of us do like the old stuff and not all of it is "worn out"... I have a mint FN-49 and it is a very nice rifle.

About "taking one's life into their own hands"... we home assemble FAL's with varying degrees of experience, equipment and knowledge... that would seem a lot scarier but we don't have people blowing themselves up on a daily basis...

PS - What was that bit about the confederacy? I heard just last week that the end of the cease fire was near
