currently have a #1 bolt head . it is seperating the case head and blowing hot gas from the breach end. have a no5 that had the same problem and a #3 bolt head fixed the problem.it doesn't do it all the time . it mostly does it with new remington or winchester ammo . when i reload i only do it for the no5and not for this paticular rifle . this one only gets brand new stuff . then i throw away the brass as it has a ring around the head area or is blown out completely .

Actually, Enfields have a "trench" (oversize) chamber to allow the rifle to work in poor field conditions and will headspace on the loose side even when new. They're also designed to handle ruptured cartridges well too. Ever wonder what the little hole on the left side of the Knox form is for? A Gas port to allow gas escape in the event of a ruptured cartridge. The rifles handle it SO well there have been people who have shot an entire magazine and not known they were getting ruptured cases until they picked up their brass later. I'm not advocating that you keep shooting the hell out of it, just saying that (a little, not alot) long headspace Enfield isn't as big a deal as it would be with other guns. If you're getting gas coming from around the breech it's WAY long though!

Try Brian at BDL Ltd. he has a HUGE building full of Enfields and parts, and is also an importer.

dean p, i don't fire it any more . i didi't notice the problem until i started reloading. used to just leave the brass laying after i fired it . since it was my first rifle i thought every thing was normal,(even the hot gas part) until i started picking up the brass then i asked a gunsmith if the state of the brass was normal . of course he said no . he told me to get a different bolt head . put the gun in the closet and didn't give it another thought. bought the no5 ,it had the same problem but it was sporterised and had a beautiful stock on it so i got the new bolt head for it from gun parts. they had a hard time finding more at the time and said that those bolt heads were getting very scarce . said i could get all the 0, and 1 bolt heads i wanted . i do appreciate all of the help folks . maybe i can get that rifle shooting again. i still have alot to learn about firearms in general. i could fill a book with s*** i don' t know . once again thanks for all the help . you folks are great.
