kit-building question

The barrel on my Imbel kit is fitting extremely too tight into the receiver... with a 3½ ft breaker bar, your sweatin and the barrel is only ¾ into the receiver. So much to the point where the barrel is rotating inside the barrel vice.

What do you guys recommend to fix this situation? My buddy and I are pretty sure the parkerizing is causing the problem. We have an idea to see if we can borrow a die to run through the threads and clear it out, but im seeing if theres any other ideas out there..

I'd like to get this Imbel built soon... any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance guys

It is not uncommon to have to chase the threads inside the receiver as well as the threads on the barrel. For the receiver you need a bottoming tap.

kit building

As well as chasing the threads you need to take a can of spray brake cleaner and spray the area that will be in the barrel vise. This will remove the oil that is soaked into the park. The brake cleaner is found at any auto parts store. Get the cheapest. Oil the barrel when you are finished.
All the best.

If u are building on a DSA reciever, u will have to retap the threads where the barrel goes in, only way u can get barrel to tighten up correctly.

This thread has links to some places that carry the taps and dies if you decide to pick some up. I think I got mine from MSC.

Yeah thats basically what we figured. Its being built on a Coonan receiver, and the one for my Rhodie fit like a dream (with a tiny bit of sanding on the barrel face)...

So it seems our plan of chasing the threads is the favored solution. Sweet

Thanks guys

If having to borrow the tools, I'd say borrow a die to chase the Imbel bbl threads first. Most likely the Coonan is OK.

my latest build is on a Coonan....it is the problem in my case. Looks like I`ll be buying a tap as well, lol. I`ve chased the bbl threads already(even closed the die up a bit) and it is still TIGHT.

Yeah its a imbel/type 3 combo in my case as well. The type 1 i got from coonan worked like a charm... owell. Borrowed a tap, we'll see how it goes!

Running a bottoming tap into the threads of the receiver worked. I'd like to note that I did not use a die on the bbl threads.

After some decent work and continuous backing out to clear the shavings and apply more oil, the bbl finally hand timed properly

I am glad that you were able to solve your problem. I am disconcerted that the problem was with the Coonan receiver.
