History 109: School me on the Swiss Variant FAL
So being the huge fan of the Swiss 550 series rifles got me thinking a while back; why didn't the Swiss adopt/order their own variant of the FAL? I mean it was pre STG 57/SG-510 right? Then today I found this...(scroll down/see Switzerland)... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk%3AFN_FAL
Now I know Wiki isn't the most reliable source in the World, and didn't find much elsewhere. So, I thought I'd come to the experts. Did the Swiss have a contract for a variant of the FAL (in ether 7.5x55 or 7.62x51) and have a falling out similar to the Germans (after FN refused to let them produce their own variant)? Thus leading them to design the STG 57 or SG-510??

The Swiss and Fals
As far as I know, The Swiss have always produced their own weapons, K31's, STGW57's and STGW 510's and then the Stgw90/Sig550. What is interesting to note though, Sig did produce a STGW 510-3 which was a 7.62x39 variant.
The Swiss did order two Fal's in 7.5x55 in 1956 and then Sig ordered one Fal in 7.62x51mm for their collection back in 1966.

That's my note in Wikipedia. I had completed the entry, but some dumbass editor decided to delete it along with 80% of the whole FAL page leaving it in the sad shape it's been in the past couple years.
What Lee said is basically correct as I understand it. Apparently the Swiss only ordered a small number of FALs chambered for the GP11 standard Swiss cartridge. The Swiss 7.5 X 55 FAL looks much like the Swedish 6.5 x55 FAL, although I have only seen the Swedish FAL in pictures. Both have longer receivers, bolt, carrier and associated components, along with bigger mags. Last I was there near 10 years ago, the Swiss version was still on display at the Swiss Munitions (SM) museum in Thun. Since then SM was absorbed into the huge ammo conglomorate RUAG. I have no idea if it is still there. If you search really hard, you might find some more information here on the Files. Garret |

Lee/Falfegnügen-- Thank you for the insight. I will have to do some more research.
I would love to find some additional info/pictures of one or both Swiss/Swedish variants. If by chance I find some, I will be sure to link them here. I also wish there was more history with the Swiss FAL, but will work with what existed. Thanks!
