Match Report - FAL Shoots IDPA
Our monthly IDPA match had a "rifle side match" Saturday, so of course I brought the FAL. The scenario was a shoot house, with 26 mandatory hits. There were two 6" steel plates at about 50 yds (the longest shots), 4 half-sized IDPA targets at 20-30yds (out the back window of the house), and the rest were full-sized IDPA targets throughout the house. All paper targets required two hits, and were scored with IDPA scoring.
I was the only .308 there, so there was no point having a Heavy Metal class. There were also two AK's, and twelve AR varients, making 15 shooters in all. I'm a long way from "pulling a Stimpy" and beating all the AR's, but I beat half of them - placing 7th out of 15. I figure the shoot house is where you'll see the biggest disadvantage to shooting a FAL, with lots of quick shots and movement. Add to that I had a mandatory magazine change while everyone else did not, and I figure 7th isn't too bad. I hope they keep having them though - maybe next time I can beat nine of them instead of just eight

Just for the record - 7.17 seconds separated 7th and 1st place. So now when I practice I am "looking for 7 seconds."
A few things I know I need to work on already: I made 4 make-up shots that were probably OK in the first place. I need to work on NOT making make-up shots. I forgot to shoot the last target, which was somewhat hidden. There was a couple second lag at the end when the RO said "Are you SURE you're finished?" Similar issues cost me seconds in the pistol match, but I'm shooting beter and better there (took 10th overall out of 68 with a G30 and 230gr full power loads). The pistol shooting seems to be helping my rifle shooting too. If I can just fix the brain farts and makeup shots now...

Just went to my first, and the club's first, 3-gun match last month. We are all shooting ARs but I am working a few like-minded fellows to lobby for at least one "Heavy Metal" friendly match a year, maybe in the Fall when things cool off a little. I think we could at least get enough guys to shoot HM to make up a squad. I am kind of wanting to run a match “WWII” style with a Garand, .45 and an 1897 Trench Gun.

You go, kotengu! I hear what you're saying about tight quarters - is your FAL 21" barrel? On the other hand, it's nice to see 7.62 holes in a sea of 5.56. What ammo were you using, BTW?
Congrats, again... MR2 |

Mine's an 18", so it wasn't so bad. I was using 147gr M80 ball reloads.

Afraid not - I did the 3-gun match in Bowling Green today, so next week I have to stay home and catch up around the house! I'm planning to be at the Gallatin IDPA/Rifle side match in June though. Can I talk you in to bringing the FAL to that one???

At least you'll make good-sized holes in the paper! Hope to see you there -
