Gold cup barrell conversion

Can I cut teh hooded area of a regular 1911 barrell to fit a gold cup slide. What else is needed?

I thought of that but unless you have cheap regular barrel it is easier to get a Gold Cup barrel. I got a Nowlin for not too much.
