Finished painting my Rhodie 50.64 - Babypoop all the way
I used DuPont Centari paint with the paint codes from NHBandit.
Dark Forest Green: DS166A Mustard Yellow "Babyshit": YS432A Here is some pictures of the step by step process. I'm very happy with the results. I took my computer outside while painting to look at Neil's rifle for a model with the paint pattern. To start with, I wanted to make sure the paint matched as well as it was reported to. This pistol grip is original. ![]() I then taped the places that wouldn't be painted on the rifle which included the gas block, front sight, flash hider, trigger, magazine release, carry handle, rear sight. ![]() I started to paint the stock. Used a 2 inch brush and tried to randomly paint the stock while looking at Neil's pictures for a guide. ![]() ![]() The barrel and handguard: ![]() ![]() Moving on to the pistol grip, top cover, and receiver: ![]() Touching up the rest of the rifle: ![]() ![]() Being satistified with the amount of "blue" I went on to yellow and mostly touched up areas I didn't hit with the blue the first time. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() In this picture I'm comparing my paint job to an original handguard. The bottom handguard is original. My handguard is shiny because it is still drying, when the paint drys it should look very flat with no shine. ![]() Compaing the rest of the rifle to the original handguard: ![]() ![]() The original pistol grip for comparision: ![]() ![]() Finished! Drying out in the garage. ![]() Here is Neil's rifle which inspired me for this build and served as a model for parts and the paint pattern. ![]() Up close they may not look identical but I'm happy with the end product. This build is as close as you can get to Neil's rifle, for the entire lower and bolt carrier came from Rhodesia from a Belgian 50.64 like Neil's. Hope you enjoyed my pictures, once again I would like to thank Neil for his pictures and information. |

Very nice job! Did they mix it up for you as a single stage formula? Was any flattening agent added? I assume you used it with activator only, no reducer. I can convert this to a PPG formula and mix it myself at my shop, just wondered how you got that level of shine.

I just took the paint codes to a paint supplier and they mixed it there. I believe the paint code contains a flattening agent in the code.

Absolutely GORGEOUS! I have a "sanitized" R1 that will get the baby poop treatment, as soon as it gets a locking shoulder, and I can find a paint dealer. Your "how to" pictures will come in handy.
THANKS!

That's a fine looking battle rifle. If I ever get around to building a para, I think it'll be a Rhodie. That one looks great!

What is the reasoning behind the color choices the Rhodesian forces selected? The mustard color can make sense depending on the dried vegetation around, but the greenie-blue? Maybe there is no specific answer as it was simply the color that was available. But it seems very consistent across all the painted versions, so I wonder if it was standardized for some reason.

FAL87, nice Rhodie, for a Rhodie. And a very good how to DIY post. Once upon a midnight dreary, while I dreamed of FAL's so feary, over many a queer and curious abomination of gunsmithing lore. As I wakened, sick and queasy, visions of Rhodies, slick and sleezy, a Rhodie build, I vowed again to ponder nevermore. (with apologies to E.A. Some autobody repair shops mix their paint in-house. Around here autoparts stores mix it for them. Check the yellow pages for a DuPont paint dealer in your area.

Although with a standard charging handle and a carry handle it's really more of a 50.61.

The .64 has a folding charging handle and no carry handle with the full length barrel.

Did the 50.61 have the Hiduminium lower receiver and stock with a 21" barrel?
I figured Neil's rifle is a 50.64 because of the Hiduminium parts and the changes were from whoever carried the rifle during the war. |

The .64 was the same as the 50.61 but with the alloy lower...the 50.63 had the folding charging handle, no carry handle and shorter barrel. Not sure where you got your information from but I own or have owned all of them.
