STG slings ?s

couple STG sling questions...

what was the original color?

did the slings have a cross-hatched pattern like the G1's?

did they have an early and late style sling, or were they all the same?

the reason I ask, I just got an "STG " sling...it appears the original color was some sort of brown, but the sling is very dark, probably after years of use....also the sling is smooth, not cross-hatched...

LaC has some STG slings....his are cross-hatched and a gray color...hence the confusion...

thanks

Not all that confusing. There were sling manufacturers in many of the countries which employed Mausers and as the military switched to the FAL they most likely used domestic made leather Mauser slings which all were not alike.

If I remember correctly, one Stg sling had the cross hatch pattern along with a "border" the length of the sling. These were similar in fashion to the G1 slings. There were probably a few makers as has already been mentioned. they probably are of high quality.

The StG slings I have (3) are much the same as yours. Fairly thick, smooth and about 3/4" to 7/8ths in width. Mine have age cracks, but are very flexible. They are dark and seem to have been liberally treated with oil.
Leather covered buckle on one end with a slot and stud on the other.

Here are three of mine:

They show varying degrees of wear and color variation. Two are very similar and exhibit the crosshatch diamond pattern and border tooling. They are both tool-stamped "Stolla Wien" at the free end and have an ink stamp at the buckle end (difficult for me to read this one).

The other sling is slightly narrower and does not exhibit the crosshatch pattern or border tooling (smooth leather). It also does not appear to have a maker's tool stamp. It is the most worn sling, so it is possible that the tooling may have been rubbed smooth over time.

Yes, both smooth and crosshatched slings seem to have been made. I think the earlier ones were crosshatched.

Yeah, the two bottoms ones in HR's pics are the ones that I remember. Could it be that the G1's were smooth?
