Barrel Twist (Argie vs Enfield)
I just happened to take a look at the barrel in my Brit L1A1 and hold it up side by side with the barrel I got with my Argie kit from Sarco. Definitely a lot more twists/lands in the Brit barrel.
I'd be interested to know what the land/twists count are and the story behind the difference. |

The Brits and Aussies played with twist rates as well as number of lands and grooves over the years.. I believe they started out with 6 lands/grooves early on and went to 4.. Twist rates I am not sure of. Also the early 6 groove barrels in Australia were broach rifled and late on in production they switched to hammer forged barrels with 4 grooves.

Does either speak to accuracy or desirability?

The standard twist rate for 7.62mm is 1 in 12 inches. I would bet they are all pretty close to that. The number of grooves is independent of the twist.

Quick way to check your twist rate is to use a cleaning rod and some tape. Put a patch on the end of the rod and seat it in the rifling. Then fold a piece of tape around the rod just touching the end of the barrel, and note its position in relation to the barrel. Now pull the rod slowly until the tape is back to the same oreintation. Then just measure from the muzzle to the tape and you have your quick and dirty twist rate.
