If I remember correctly, Snowhawk said that the 2011 spot was a dusty bad spot a couple weeks after we were there. Other than that, the location was great.

In my honest opinion, the shoot needs to be 2 to 3 weeks later this year. So far this has been the coldest/driest December in decades. Having cold daytime temps and rain East of Bend in June is going to be the new norm until solar activity ramps back up. (google Maunder minimum folks)

I'll be wherever is decided on. Hopefully my videos and pictures have convinced a couple of my gun enthusiast co-workers to attend. This year I'll remember my pillow so I won't have an ear splitting migraine from my neck arthritis flaring up.

Any word on the date? I am planning out my summer weekends and don't want to miss this shoot as I only had a few hours to attend last year (location was great!). Thanks.

It would behoove us to get that spot for the belt fed goodness coming along.

Howdy folks,
Last year's spot was swell. In retrospect, I think it was much better than the one we had scouted earlier, and then got displaced from at the last minute by Snowhawk's new....friends.

I'm wondering what has "changed" this year.....usually by this time, we've got the organizational stuff started and I've packed, unpacked, and re-packed my gear three times over. Not to mention the usual massive number of posts on the Oregon site in anticipation of the best weekend of the year. Oh well, we'll see if folks are just distracted with the day to day of life and have their priorities all wrong with grownup things like....careers, bills, home improvement projects, eating, and bathing.

I'm wondering what "advantage"cheat Tat2 will turn to THIS year? Last year was a scope...this year maybe a...(quotation marks with fingers)...LA..SER? Or...maybe a wee person with a wee hammer and a skillet hiding in the brush downrange to clang clang clang him to first place?
(oh the depths the competitive...lacking true talent, will stoop to for victory)

And now....uncharacteristically....I'll start the smack talk. The Sks trigger group goes into the mail tomorrow to Kivaari's. I meant to do it last year but it didn't happen and I regretted it so I'm gonna make sure it's done early. Other than TechnoCrutchman (Troy), you should all get resigned to gettin' whooped by a dude with a '51 Tula Arsenal Refurb'd Sks.....oh yeah.

Are we sticking to last year's "events"? Is brunop gonna show with his steel? Are 97% of the people who shoot the events gonna head on back to camp and NOT help pick up the steel just because THEY'RE done shooting? (wouldn't wanna break a trend) and yes, that needed to be said....AGAIN!

Are we even GOING to have an Oregon Fal Shoot this year?

All right... guess now that "THE" Rally is over, I can come out of the woodwork.

So, location, location, location? Pine Mtn IS a great location, pending moisture.

Will the dates still be the traditional Father's Day weekend?

I hope I can get schooled by Team Tula, regardless of the triggerman.

Events didn't achieve the usual fervor last year...
Will Tat2 remember his pistol steel and stage book this time, and will Brunop, again, afford us his rifle steel?

Since I am selling out the rest of my toys, I might have to borrow sumthin ta' feed my remaining ammo to for some clock times...

I agree Pluskat, bathing just gets in the way of more important hobbies. I'm too busy trying to figure out how to up my game in the cooking department. After taking the title with ease in 2010 with the ABT, 2011 was an utter failure with the crowd favorite being a tie between Sportsnut's BBQ chicken and the always popular "Fatty". MRS. BRUNOP wins the consolation prize for "Food not made from tasty animals" with the German potato salad homerun. Tuscan Raider has second place with the Omellette entry.

Don't care where it is, don't care when it is, (I hope it's in a warmer month), I'll be at the 2012 Oregon FAL shoot. Hopefully with a couple of my bigtime shooter co-workers. (they have trailers and 4-wheelers).

If you cook breakfast for everyone Saturday morning and quit bitchin about the steel I will take your place Saturday on steel clean-up.

See that way, by your own words, you are exempt from steel duties.

Nice heads up on the sunspot minimum business. Knew of it, hadn't seen it in direct relation to my day time high temp!

I never saw the m44 marvel of Prineville resevoir, was it a Tula as well?
Curious how this latest adventure into eastern european arms demonstrations turns out. Will there be more material for non-ethnic jokes about which way the clip goes in and how to properly adjust the sights with heavy equipment? Of course something more Tantalizing could have happened but I recall last years episode was the 22lr zero on the 5.56 for kingshot, then again maybe I am the only one observing those details?

Anymore, I decided to pick one rifle and make it my mule. It will be a FAL. The rest will be sacrificed to the cash gods to buy a lightweight scope mount for it...Scar17.

Oh and why do you always gotta start talkin' this funny hygenic nonsense.
For someone that sits with the wolves in the morning, for his business,
ya sure do talk about a lot about it

Perhaps a little less "detail" would be in order?!?!?

I like the "one rifle" concept as well and have toyed with going there. The problem is...some of those around me seem determined to undermine my decisiveness which ultimately procludes me from making that final selection.

(that's my reply if you were kidding...mostly)

HERE'S the one if you weren't so much...

It ain't...."bitchin"...ole buddy ole pal, and I'm not trying to get outta my share of humpin' the stuff. I've done it all five years for at least the cleanup half and I don't intend on sandbagging now. The problem comes in where year after year I keep seeing pretty much the same folks show up...eat, drink, and be merry...shoot brunop's steel....and then amble back to camp while the same few of us...INCLUDING the guy who bought and brought the steel, work to pick it all back up and load it into his vehicle.

Those that have contributed year after year by taking on cooking meals for everyone are NOT who I'm "bitching" about. If you're one of 'em...thanks from the bottom of my classic 6 pack stomach!....ok, 12 pack....ok ok...half case. And, the nice man who ran the events this last year shouldn't have to be downrange at the end loading targets. He kept us all on track from shooter to shooter as best as anyone could while herdin' cats...(and he drives a Jeep). And this year's Prom Queen, I believe, was also exempt due to his "pre-Fal Shoot organizational time and efforts". BUT...we've had quite a few "attendees" year after year who, along with most first timer's, run their guns and never even bother to offer to help out. THEY'RE the ones I'm...."bitching" about.

The sh_t's heavy and the work would go a lot quicker if more than just a few pitched in is all I'm saying.

(Jayzuz....I guess I'll never win that non-confrontational rating I soooo had hoped for)
Brother, I've only been to 3 of your guys' get togethers, but the biggest
thing I have noticed is through the help of many, the job gets done.

Hell man, we had an actual shitter on premises last year. How is that for people going above and beyond? And progression?

Tell truth, no one has ever asked me for help with steel.
And I doubt anyone else would not help if asked either.

So are you cooking breakfast?

I hadn't read all the way down until now. "sits with the wolves"

You funny mista.

and the "why" of it is NOT something I'd recommend you, or anyone else delve too deeply into. Just as a bride in a wedding dress cannot visit a coal mine and come out lily white....one cannot attempt to navigate through my brain and not....get any on 'em.

Well Tuscan, as you may notice, I attempted to pull my post in an effort to be the friendly, easy going sort of guy I'm known to be....but you beat me to it with your quoting me so I'll stand by what I wrote.

I agree that most everyone would've helped...if asked, but, after smashing one of my cold fingers between a target plate and the bed of the pickup last year...I wasn't much in a mood to dwell on that fact and instead, focused on who WASN'T down the hill helping. Perhaps I'm too hard on the laz...er, others so again, in an effort to be "nicer"...I'll drop the matter by saying to all....some help with the steel would be appreciated.

Sure....I'll help cook breakfast....now, how do you like your Pop Tarts?

Is Windermere Sponsoring our next event? I am thankful to have their support!
Is it cash, catering or accommodations? Even just a couple cases of Purple Puppy and Radaway Green would be welcome! Bring a Bren!!

I don't think the last location was bad at all. I think my favorite place hasn't been found yet, but it is true that the rain from last year might have been part of my problem. Then there was that 'clean' handgun run that got 'lost'...

I think I'm with Tailback on the dates, and the soon-to-be typical cool weather in early June. We did it the last week of June once, and it was 104* for a couple days in a row. Brutal. I think All FAL and Pluskat will remember it well. I know my kids do.

We moved it up to the third weekend in June (IIRC) to avoid school, graduations, etc. at one end, and the end of June/4th of July time frame in the event the end of June came near the 28th - 30th which *could* conceivably encroach on people's 4th of July plans either for work before the long weekend, or people taking an extended 4th holiday.

I'm planning on being there, but I'm not committing to this year's event. In my perfect world, the dates (whatever they end up being) coincide with the arrival of my brother, who hasn't been home in a long time. He is commissioning with the US Army in either late May or early June, and then he's headed to Corvallis for some R&R before heading to Ranger School and then to Italy for a couple or three years. It would be GREAT if he could make it to the FAL Shoot, since he's been hankering to show up to it since it first went off lo those many years ago...

Anyhoo, if the dates don't work, or if I'm helping him move out of the current place, or if something else is going on with him, I'm out. My steel is available for the good of the order, but someone will have to come get it. No drama, since, as I said, I'm planning on being there. I'll keep my eye on his dates, which become 'solid' sometime in April.

I'm trying not to cry as I think about missing fatties, chicken, and ABTs.... The King Shot was super great last year, when everyone was hanging out together and BSing. And trying to shoot .22s at the Sacred Trophy.

I suggest we get some things worked out ahead of time - like what the shoots will be, and what the 'contest' parts are, and how it will be measured. And if scopes, red dots, and iron sights will be treated the same in a 'contest' setting. This is that 'arms race' I was talking about three years ago. I loved the WWII surplus bolt gun events in the past, since everyone knew the deal, and it was fun to see all the different 'solutions' to 'surplus bolt gun': Mosin, Enfield, Mauser, K31 straight-pulls, etc. And everyone was on equal footing when Tat2 kicked the shit out of everyone else.

When it all comes down to it, I need to shoot more often so I can offer a little competition to Tat2.

Nice to see ya chime in BrunoP! How's your new year shaping up?

The only thing that will help us against the racegunner is if we tinker with his Dillon and boost his power factor >just< enough to delay his recoil recovery another hundredth or three... Over a 15 shot stage, that could mean an extra miss for the rest of us!

I know a lot of folks are going to be howling if we wait to finalize the date until April. It would be unfortunate if we decide on a weekend, and then it doesn't work out for you brunop, but....it sounds like you've come to terms with that possibility and as should always be the case...family comes first.

I'd volunteer to transport the steel (and guard it) IF....the entire family doesn't attend, otherwise, I'll have the trailer full up with camping gear and some other "combined effort" might have to be arranged between those attending who live on the soggy side of the hills.

We'll it looks like things are getting started for this years shoot. I'll be there for sure and in the unfortunate event that Brunop can not make it I drive right through his area. I'm working on some 22 steel and some larger pistol steel to bring this year. Along with the ABT. Already getting exicited for this shoot. I Know (Rich of Oregon) will also be attending. On another note I did get my new house so it is very busy right now. Still have 2 storage units full.

YAAAAAAWWWWNNNNNN

Who the hell woke me up with all this trash talk? Never mind, I should have known.

I`m planning on bringing more steel. I have enough T-1 material to build 12 poppers similar to Brunop`s. I`ll be bringing the rimfire steel as well. I`ll also be supplying the the same Remmy .22 rimfire ammo for all to shoot. You buggers didn`t even put a dent in the ammo I brought last year.

I`m happy to assist with running matches again, but I intend to partake in the fun this year.

As far as classes/comps go, it would be really easy to go overboard so I`d like to approach it from the KISS standpoint.

Iron site centerfire pistol
Iron site rimfire pistol
Iron site mill bolt gun
Iron site Fal
Iron site mouse gun

Lump all pistols with dots/scopes together in one class.
Lump all rifles with dots/scopes together in one class.

We need to spread the comps over a couple days so EVERYONE has a chance to shoot. In other words, pistol stuff one day, rifle another. No sense cramming it all into a one day frenzied shoot fest. Most of use were there at least 2 days (Snowhawk, Black Elk, and myself were there 4). Lets spread out the fun alittle.

Pluskat - Yep, I wasn't thinking that we'd wait til April to hear from me: I'll make it if I can, and I'll miss it if I can't. And I'll cry if that's how it goes.

Stimpy runs the deservedly *almost* world-famous RBGC FAL Shoot in Georgia, which we took some from ideas from for the first year's shoot I was involved with. He makes two categories only: Irons and Optics. There are no rifles allowed besides FALs, though, so there is no discussion about mousegun versus mbr versus whose donkey is bigger than the rest. The handgun matches are 'Side Matches', and the one time I went, you had to either use your own Browning High Power, or you had to borrow his (in keeping with the FN theme...). If you borrowed, you could run a practice run IIRC. Again, no complaining about his gun versus this gun.

I suggest we do almost what 4x401 said, with slight modifications to copy Stimpy's rules. This is after giving a lot of thought to this over the years, and with an eye to keeping things 'roughly even' in the various matches that I've thought of:

1) "Stock MBR": FALs, G3s & CETMEs, M14s, M1As, & M1s, as well as the rifles from the Eastern Bloc in both 7.62x54R & 7.62x39. YES, YES, I already know that the AKs are not exactly MBRs, but rather are carbines. How about this: they are 2400 fps and .30 caliber - can that be close enough? Should we let other people argue who shoot SVDs and M1s that they're subject to more recoil than the lowly FAL shooters? I think this group should be irons and no comps or weird muzzle devices for dealing with recoil (h/t to Stimpy).

2) "Open", or "Optics": With apologies to my BFAM (Brother From Another Mother), no one shoots ARs with iron sights anymore (YES, I have heard of NM matches and Camp Perry...). Whether you want to shoot a comped race gun with GPS/laser/RD/scope/etc., or you just want to shoot an FAL with a scope, this is that place. Red Dots aren't scopes, but they are optics. Everyone can probably figure that one out.

3) CF Handguns. Autos, Revolvers, comped guns, stock guns, whatever. People carry comped guns for EDC, so game on.

4) Rimfire Handguns. Easy, huh?

5) Mil-surp bolt guns. Same as always.

These are my suggestions, and they are worth exactly what you paid for them. I don't care a ton either way, as for the last two years I've shot someone else's rifle for most events - without even shooting a sighter (many thanks to Rich of Oregon and JDHD Junkie). I just think we should make as many 'hedges' and 'arguments' and 'discussions' go away BEFORE the Shoot.

And, if I had been much more pro-active about this a couple of years ago, I wouldn't have screwed the pooch with Vanilla Gorilla and Oregon FALer on the King Shoot. And whatever other mistakes I've made along the way.

I'm going to plan on attending this one, and hope nothing interferes again. The last couple times I was forced to cancel out, and after reading the posts' that were made about the grand time everyone had, I swore I'd figure out a way to attend the next one. I have the gear, the transportation, the weapons, the ammo, I just need the extra time and cash.

I agree events should start Friday. Pistol runs are faster paced and
can be done quicker so I throw that out for Friday's agenda.

You guys have an advantage over me in that alot of you are within
a couple of hours of any campsite. If some events can be done during
the day Friday I have no objections, and don't mind doing small events
when I roll in.

The highlight is the steel drops, and should be done Saturday.
These also take longer and should be started as soon as RO's and
shooters show up to the firing line after being fed and coffee'ed.
Or when you are in the "groove."

My true regret with my trips is that I have to leave so early Sunday
mornings. 7 hour drives suck and I know there is still trigger time.

Hey, Tuscan -

I forgot to tell you, I love your sig line. Great quote!

And I wanted to post that there is some trigger time Sunday morning, but we all wait til you're gone. And then we don't post about it here. But we wink at each other when we show back up the next year to *remind* everyone to keep their yaps shut.

It's mostly when sportsnut starts handing out the free .50 BMG ammo...

TR buddy, I would never keep secrets from you. You don`t recall that David & I left Saturday after the king shoot? I know nothing of the FREE .50 cal. stuff Brunop is talking about.

Sooooo are we looking to set a date for this year yet? I`m happy with the same as last year, and could someone refresh my memory when that was?

BTW
I`m going to pull out my generator this weekend, to see if it runs my welder. If it does, I`ll be bringing it for repairing (Brunops) targets I`m not worried about the stuff I`m building.

Come on boys, lets set some dates and make some plans!

I forgot to put in the winkie 4x401. There.
You guys live close enough I know you have to be shootin'.

I am voting for usual mid June times. Rain sucked last
year, but I did get to shoot some tracer with no worries.

I have a friend who wants to bring full squirt weapons.

We need last years spot around the same time.

no one shoots ARs with iron sights anymore
uh....no need to apologize my darling, but........what about me and Tuscan?....IIRC we held our own in the event just fine.

I'm all over the idea of two classes...irons/optics, but...and not trying to start anything here (especially since I'm leaning towards the Sks this year)...I kinda think the M16/AR15 has been established as a MBR in just a few places around the world by oh, uh...our nation's Military....the IDF...the SAS and quite a few others. I'm sorry but I just can't get my arms around excluding the AR's because they puke out a smaller bullet and buck a little lighter. If I run the Sks it's a moot point for me, but I'd like to leave the door open in case Tat2 shows up with an....iron sighted AR...cough cough...never happen....cough.

Other than that, I'm really good with anything and everything competition/classification-wise that others would like to arrange.

I'm having fun each year watching this annual event continue to change with new faces and ideas. I'm also REAL keen on having some "consistent's"....like Sportsnut and his magic mea....er, wait, that won't sound right....his great grill products.....and wondering how Snowhawk will "up the culture" element. Like the year before when he taught the kids how to make a real sling...or the year before that when he showed off his Roman soldier's whistle and gave some beer stein history....or this last year when he tried to enlist some friends of his to surprise us all with a skit from Deliverance. Unfortunately, his new pals reportedly got a little..."TOO into character" ahead of time and he was forced to settle for a "dressed" (hopefully) rehearsal.

Anyway...maybe my life's mundane but I look forward to this weekend all year and, despite my jacked-up personality, I truly am eager to see everyone again. do you think they'll buy that bullsh_t? Jeezuz, I sounded like a damn Nancy.

Can't see where it would matter on a King Shot, but it is apples and oranges on poppers or shoot-and-move stuff. But don't take my word for it, check out any national competitive shooting sport, and see if they classify them the same way.

And I think everyone knows it's a carbine, not a rifle. O-kay! (now that that's settled ) I'll put my two cents in for dates:

Can't do early June: kids are still in school. And even if you don't have kids, you could be attending someone's HS or College graduation. Even if you aren't, someone is.

Can't do June 29, 30, and July 1, because it is too close to July 4th, which is a Wednesday this year. You don't take days off around the 4th? Well lots of people make it their water/out of state camping date for the summer, and if you (you) were taking Monday Tuesday off in prep for the 4th, you would probably be counting on the weekend before as part of those plans. Even if you aren't, someone is.

We used to do it on the June 22nd, 23rd, and 24th (Fri, Sat, Sun), but then Fry couldn't come because he is/was gator fishin' that week. On top of that we had that BRUTAL year when it was 104, so we moved it a week earlier in hopes of cooler weather AND a chance to meet someone's schedule. Well Fry doesn't come anyway, so I don't think that is a reason anymore. On top of that, if we do it the week "early", we will be doing this on Father's Day again this year (June 17th).

So I'm hoping we can finesse the whole thing and do it the 22nd, 23rd, and 24th of June as we've done in the past.

JMHO. YMMV.

I'll second the 22,23,24 I'll bring the BBQ and try to show up on the 21st to help set up. I was thinking of slow roasting some whole pork loin on friday . Which would leave saterday open for some of sportsnuts magical #@$% and The Tailback suprise. I'm not to worried about what we shot as long as there is a spot to burn up lots of ammo. Can't WAIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

AFAIK thats the shoot date I`m planning for.

I`ll be steering clear of the Tailback surprise though, it sounds alot like the Sanduskey shower hug to me.

If the voting were based on ownership of the coolest propane/camp stove conversion, you would have the Line Item, Veto Power, and Super Vote all rolled into one.

Since it isn't, you can just vote. And you'll probably get outvoted.

Those are the same people that call MREs "food". Better than nothing? Yes. So's their "rifle".

Let's look at it this way: everyone on planet earth knows that the political side of purchasing, congressional approvals for funding projects, and plain old historical "value" has as much or more to do with what gets purchased, named, etc., than what that program or item actually is, so let's look at comparative "rifles"...

What is the AK? Sheet metal conscript's carbine. Built by drunken serfs who can't get the sights and gas blocks on straight. For 200 to 300 yard effective range (roughly), and to run whether the conscript takes care of it or not. I'll pause here to say that I love mine, and am actively engaged in getting more of them, but that's another topic.

The shorter engagement ranges in the jungles of Viet Nam, Cambodia, and elsewhere in Southeast Asia, made it clear to the Soviets that the Americans were on to something with their lighter (wait for it...) carbines, so they went back to their own carbine and went to an even smaller cartridge - the 5.45mm x 39.

Just here to help you grab back onto reality, rather than get in a semantics war based on an inherently political technical manual...

A guy on "Sons of Guns" last night called the AR a battle rifle,
so I'm going with him, and he used to be Army.

I might rock an M1 this year anyways.

Okay, so being a new member, I've been reading all this to try and figure it out.

-When you mention Pine Mountain, are you talking about the area East of Bend where the Pine Mountain Observatory is?

-This is supposed to be a meet and great event with friendly competitions, right?
