Why Europe won't Implode
It's all good..........
http://news.yahoo.com/why-europe-won...045800371.html The global financial system is currently being roiled by one thing and one thing only: the fate of Europe. This past weekend, high-level meetings of both the International Monetary Fund and the G20 nations took place in Washington, and the predominant focus was on Europe and whether the nations of the European Union and the euro zone would be able to stave off what increasingly appears to be a make-or-break crisis over banks, the sovereign debt of Greece, and the stability of the international financial system. It isn’t just that Angela Merkel, Germany’s answer to Margaret Thatcher, has drawn what for her is an unequivocal line that Greece will not leave the European Union or the euro zone. It’s that slowly, sloppily, the governments of Europe are awakening to the realization that since they have tethered their collective economic fate to each other, the costs of unraveling are so immense as to be untenable. No government feels comfortable demanding more funds to bail out Greece or shore up banks or create a backstop for the tenuous finances of Italy. But each government understands at some animalistic level that no electorate will celebrate the consequences of doing too little. Even those supposedly dour, disapproving burghers of Düsseldorf who are tired of bailing out what they see as profligate Greeks would blanch at the market consequences of the end of the euro. Germany doesn’t just pay to maintain that union; it benefits mightily as well. "no electorate will celebrate the consequences of doing too little" Stupid electorate.......

I doubt Germany will go "nazi" any time soon, however,I can see them erecting barriers to seal them off of other european parasitic nations. Only logical.

Give all the Germans a rifle and tell them their money is being stolen by the French.

What if Greece wished to peacefully seceed from the Union, the EU that is. Would then a Lincolnesque army of holy warriors be sent forth to destroy Greece and preserve the Union?

That is an interesting question. They seem to want the union to hold together from what I have heard on the radio news. I also heard today that 80% of Germans are against any more bailouts.Wonder if that will make as much difference what the politicians do there as they did here when most of US were against bailouts............

Greece should recapitalize by exporting mass quantities of Greek salads and gyros. They would be back in the black by Christmas.

Sorry, but I can't swallow the ASS-u-Mption that Germany "benefits" from the EU... how, PRECISELY?
And if it's such a given, then why did the Swiss and the Brits never buy in, and instead preserve their own respective currencies?

Good points. Being anything but stupid, I'm sure the Germans must've foreseen this possibility (eventuality?) back when the EU was just an ivory tower exercise. They KNEW they'd be the bulwark, the last resort, the buck-stop depot.
And, if I could read Deutsch, I'd probably be able to glean from semi-public docs how realistic/optimistic they were.
