Corrosion forming on rounds in mags
So I was going through mags a couple days ago, loading and unloading some ammo for my range trip saturday and to my surprise, one of the bullets at the top has some blobs of thick green stuff growing on it where it was in contact with the magwell and feed lips. I went through the rest of my mags today, some of them freshly loaded with some shiny new privi partizan I bought off aimsurplus and found more green stuff developing on them too! After some internet searching I discovered this is corrosion eating away at the copper. I ended up unloading all my mags and wiped off every bullet inspecting them to make sure they were ok. Now, arfcom ended up comforting me in regards to still being able to safely shoot it since it only left surface discoloration and no pitting, but this situation did cause me some concern.
As for reasons, the common factor that came to mind for this to be happening in so many mags is that when I first got the mags I used Hoppes 9 to clean them real good since they were filthy and rusty. I put greese on the outside of the mag bodies, the followers and springs, but I dont think I lubed/greesed the inside. So it seems that the hoppes I used to clean the insides has been lingering and eating away ay my bullets, just thought i'd share that with you guys. Any other ideas what could have done it? Only other fluids were preservative gun greese or CLP lube, I doubt those would cause corrosion since their used to protect against it, the mags were left sitting in an open top box in my room btw, not a particularly humid environment (i dont think?) |

Many things can cause verdigris, though I would suspect the Hoppe's in this case. I prefer Hoppe's #9 to clean rifle bores because it does act on copper fouling. I suggest rinsing the mags in acetone, or lacquer thinner, or spray brake cleaner to eliminate all residue.
