Good idea, especially after the import ban we need more American MFG's to step up on this.

I thought the last batch of Green Mountain FAL barrels that were on the market were considered junk??

barrels
The extractor cuts were not quite right and caused a burr to form in the chamber. That caused a lot of greif for folks who didn't know what was happening. I dealt with it a number of times. Otherwise they shot OK. I never owned one for a long period of time but have dealt with over a hundred over the years.
Still- Ask DSA how the barrel market is. There is a reason they do not produce more than they do, I suspect. They already offer quite a bit.

I don't know about the Green Mountain FAL barrels, so can't personally comment on what happened in the past. However, there are certainly some other barrel makers around with both the expertise and track record to make a first-rate FAL barrel.
One possibility would be Criterion, who makes replacement barrels for M1 Garand, M1A, and other military rifles for the CMP. Criterion is a subsidiary of Krieger, which says a lot about their capabilties http://www.criterionbarrels.com Another possibility would be Lothar Walther, who also make barrels for a variety of OEM applications on a semi-custom or low volume basis. I'm not sure whether all their production is in Germany or whether they have manufacturing capability at their Georgia facility which would be a key factor for 922(r) compliance. Here is a link to their website http://www.lothar-walther.com/310.php I'm sure there are more, but those are just the top two that came to mind. However, as adam762 points out, cost and market demand are going to be the critical factors. No manufacturer is likely to tool up for making FAL barrels unless they know there will be a consistent demand with sufficient volume to make it worthwhile. The only other alternative is for a third party to front the costs themselves and absorb all the risk of ordering a quantity of X barrels from a quality maker at Y cost, while hoping to sell enough of them fast enough to stay out of the poorhouse. Any volunteers?

Green Mountain, Douglas, Shilen, Kreiger, Hart, Remington, Anyone pretty much will sell you all the blanks you want. Find a local gunsmith or machinist shop to turn them down to your specs. It will not be the cheapest way out, but it can be done.

I have a green mountain barrel on my Franken Fal and it seems to shoot just fine. I had no idea who the maker of the barrel was when I bought it but a few members ID'd it as a GM. I was concerned at first because of all the bad reviews floating around but after a few range days my confidence returned.
I do agree though, we need a good source of American made barrels that we can get for cheap.

I think there was a group buy in the past when someone contacted century and got in an order with Century's order for all their G1 Century kit builds.
