Fun New Toy - $20
I saw this the other day and figured it was worth a try at only $20. I have enough land to scoot this thing all over with birdshot, and I figured it'd give me more shotgun practice that's a little more exciting than still targets (and lasts longer!). I was skeptical at first that it'd withstand a 12ga, but after 30 or so shots it seems just fine.
Only complaint is that with a 12ga it doesn't really "randomly hop around" like I was hoping - it pretty much goes straight back. I'm thinking I can run around it and shoot it in different directions though - practicing moving, shooting, and reloading while trying to keep it from stopping. I got mine from Gander Mtn, but I've seen them at Dick's too -

I have periodically toyed with getting some of these for matches as they would allow for close-up reactive targets.
Have you tried it with 308? They need to make one that can sit on a piece of 2x4 shelf and fall over easily but be weighted enough to resist light winds. They used to have cubes of this stuff, still available? gotten any cheaper?

Dunno about .308 - my little farm isn't big enough to shoot the FAL safely! I'll try it this weekend if the rain will hold off a little. I was planning on getting a little practice in anyway.
I think it would be fine for what you want to do, but I'd worry about shooting it too closely. I think the target itself would be fine, but all the little rocks and things in the ground may cause funny ricochets (maybe I'm just being paranoid). It's plenty heavy to not be blown about by the wind. I saw where Cheaper Than Dirt sells the whole line including this, the cube, and the ball. I went with the top hat because I though it would bounce around more unpredictably.

$20, huh?
An empty 2 litre soda bottle will do the same and ya gets ta drink the contents! LOL. THey tend ta get pretty chewed up after 10 or 12 rounds; but WTF? it's a free soda bottle ![]() I looked at those self-healing targets a few years ago. Waaaay price for my likes. Then, something like the one shown woulda been upwards of $50, so I passed. We had been looking for the same reason as Stimp..cheap alternatives to steel for matches. With 10's of hundreds of hits during a season, we were much better off with steel for fixed placement/falling targets. We have a Dick's down here too; but I on;t se he sells any gun related stuff....just team shirts and ghey sports junk.

Here it is after about 30 rounds of #6 birdshot and two hits from the FAL. The .308 "holes" are marked with the blue arrows. The packaging claims that it'll last about a thousand rounds. Judging from the hits so far I'd guess that's about right, assuming FMJ only use.

Be happy to bring it next month if you want to see how much damage 30 FAL Filers can do to it. It'll make a little more challenging target than an 8" steel plate or paper plate. I guess it's about the size of a 4" clay?
