Barreld Uppers Questions
Hi everyone I have a question or two.
I wanted to know if I get a lower where can I find just the barrled upper? I've been told if I do that it's as easy as building an AR-15, is that true? So just point me in the right way and what I need to know. Thanks. |

After timing the barrel to the upper receiver and headspacing the bolt/carrier to the barreled upper, building an FAL is generally very simple.
As for who is selling barreled uppers...Well, not really anyone. I'd say that's mainly because the upper and barrel and bolt/carrier all become semi-permanently dedicated once put together correctly. Also, when someone goes to get a receiver, they generally get one to go with a kit that has the barrel, bolt and carrier all together. It isn't terribly costly to have an FALsmith put a rifle together for you, so you might ought to just buy the parts then send it all off to Moses or Gunplumber, just to name a two of the many. Or watch the marketplace and see if a barreled upper pops up. Doesn't happen all that often, however. |

Another thing to consider is,
The barreled upper of an AR does not contain the receiver like a Fal does. The lower on an AR is the registered part. That's why everyone and their brother offers barreled AR uppers. My .02 Dave

It is a bit more complicated than building an AR but can still be easily done. It is basically screwing the barrel onto the upper receiver (the 4473 part) to the TDC position and installing the correct width locking shoulder to get the correct head space.
However, there are a LOT more variants of the FAL which make them a lot more interesting than the AR-15. Half the fun is deciding if you want an inch or metric pattern rifle. Now do you want an Australian with wood furniture or do you like that STG-58 from Austria? Maybe you want a battle veteran from Rhodesia or a much carried and rarely shot Imbel from Chile.
