How old are these bullets?

I've shot some pretty "old" "oddball" bullets in the last couple years but have never seen/loaded any old Hornady. I have easily loaded 600 rounds of various Speer and Sierra in the last 2 years.......got pretty spoiled picking up boxes of Sierra/Speer .308 bullets for $10 a box
So what you say? 60's? 70's?

My bet is older than 1960s... I started reloading in 1960 or 61 and that box would have looked "old" to me then!

I just emailed this pic to a Hornady tech guy for an ID. On the phone he said they started with 165 grain 30 cal so this is prob a few years after that. If its towards the begging I will prob leave them be as I'm particularly fond of Hornady bullets.

I wonder if he meant 150gr 30cal bullets? I don't recall that weight in any line of .30 cal bullets back when Hornady started (post WW2)..

Seems like the 165gr bullet is missing from loading manuals of that era...

Hmmm????

The fellas at Hornady think '64 from the pic. Said there should be a date stamped into the cardboard on the bottom.

I do not know the age, but it looks like at some point it was for sale at $6.50, judging by the writen price on the bottom.
The price tag on the front read $15.00. Someone turned a nice profit.

If that was $6.50 in 1964 like Hornady thinks.....reloading wasn't economically viable.

"Retail" is listed in the 1972 Handloaders Digest as $6/100rd box for Hornady 180gr .308" bullets.

I bet that price may not be the original asking price as those bullets date further back than the 1970s.

I guess I shouldn't whine too much about bullets prices then. That probably equivalent to us spending $50 a box for non match bullets. I assume the machinery to make bullets was pretty exclusive and the market was fixed. Was talking to a fello ammo nut at the gunshow today about S&W/Ficocci getting basically pushed out of the ammo market in the 70's. I take it commercial ammo completely changed for the better in the 80's?

Probably about as old as these:

Those old Speer bullets have a much nicer ogive than the old Hornadys. I have got some very nice groups with the old Speers. Those old square ogive Hornadys shoot like shit in my opinion.

Side note.."S&M gun shop" That's damn funny. "Buy our bullets or you'll get a spanking!"
