Talking Short Indian or Pakistani woodie???

OK now I have your undivided attention......................

I was watching a show on NatGeo about some guy driving the highest highway in the world. It goes across a mountain pass between India & Pakistan. At one point he is checking into a checkpoint to ensure he has made the trip & there is a scene where he is being escorted by a small military contingent armed with some kind of L1A1, Indian or Pakistani is not clear as the commentary doesn't specify which side of the border he is on.

But they have yet another odd handguard configuration I've never seen, or heard of.

The wood handguard stops behind the gas block. It is far enough back from the gas block that even in a fast clip you can see a gap (I'm guessing 1/2"~3/4") between the front of the handguard & the back of the gas block.
Any ideas of why, or for what reason?

Not really.
The handguard ended after the bare barrel, but before the gas block's rearward extension.
I'm guessing at the 1/2~3/4" but it's not too far off, guessing but max of 1" min of 1/2".

Kind of daewoo looking, but on an L1A1
