Heresy? Comm bloc optic on FAL?
Greetings. Just got my first FAL last week, and am thinking about which optic to choose. My background is with AK's and Saiga's, and I own both a Kobra red dot and a POSP 4x24 that I use with these.
I've been considering a Henzoldt, or a SUIT for the FAL, or even something current, but keep wondering about mounting a POSP with a Weaver base to the FAL. In my experience the Russian scopes are built like a tank, have good optics, and I've become used to the Soviet style range finder and the bullet drop chevrons to account for range right there on the reticle. And on the plus side, they usually don't cost as much as western optics. Has anyone else used a Soviet style optic on the FAL? |

The cold war's been over for years, so I have a Kobra red dot on one. Picatinny rail model on an ARMS topcover mount. Does that count
![]() With the dot over a "V" reticule I have a 100 yd zero with the dot & a 200 with the chevron tip as well. |

Thanks for the response brownknees. I love the Kobra on my AK too. I dunno, I'm used to the Russian optics, and they are still a good bargain for the most part. Henzoldts seem to going at a premium right now, and I don't know how good the refurbished SUIT scopes I've seen actually are.
Not all that familiar with the US mil-dot reticle commercial scopes, so it seemed the Russian opitic might be a good alternative for me... |

SUIT sights are a lot nicer than you think they will be (assuming the referb was done well).
The Hensoldt is a better sight because of the multiple range settings available as opposed to the 300/500 setting of the SUIT, & the dial-in windage. However it is a fully functional & effective combat type optic, even if not a match grade sight. After all the FAL is not a match type rifle either! I have discovered that there is very little difference between the eye relief of the SUIT & the Hensoldt, but everyone complains about the SUIT's eye relief, & no-one complains about the Hensoldt's! Maybe it has to do with the rubber eyecup on the SUIT. Comparing red dots to magnifying optics doesn't work for me though as its not an apples to apples comparison. |

Saw that DSA actually has those on their web site, but the price is scaring me!

I saw them on the DSA site as well - but they were not actually in stock.
Got my M1 4x for the FN/FAL from SWFA. It is really great glass. My next best for comparision is a SS 3x9 or a Nikon Monarch - at 4x, I think the IOR is best. Good enough that I just ordered the shorter version (M2) with .223 cam for my AR15...
