I would like to replace the carry handle on my SA58. It has a tiny (~.25") lock ring that holds it on. Does anyone know the proper tool (with a link from where to purchase it) to remove this small lock ring and replace it? The lock ring is listed as part #114 in the DS Arms schematic.

I believe the gas adjustment part of the standard combo tool will loosen the nut that holds the carry handle on.

Ahhhhh, I see now that I look at the drawing.
You're not replacing the handle, you're replacing the handle. Never mind, JB

Survey Punk, I think DKN is only wishing to replace the actual wire filler handle portion.
I have used a small "HOOKED" style ice pick/dental tool ro remove mine in the past, they are NOT easy for someone like me that has to experiment with such items, as a lot of this stuff is was my first attempts, but it worked for me. I am sure one of the builders or someone that knows much more than me will be along to direct you. Best of Luck LC

Why not just improve the rifle by removing the handle entirely - "'ere, it's not a bleedin' purse, mate ".
Are you actually using the handle so much that you feel there is an advantage in changing it BTW, that little ring WILL fly about a half a mile if it gets a chance. If you must tinker, do it inside a large clear plastic bag to even up the odds of finding it when it seeks its freedom !

This is how I do it, not for the squeamish.
Get a bench block with the various sized holes drilled in it. if you have a rubber or delron one that works best. If you have a steel one put a couple of layers of masking tape over it if you intend to reuse the handle. Mine is actually an old hockey puck with a bunch of holes drilled in it. Set the end of the handle in a hole big enough to clear the rod but not the handle. Smack it with a plastic mallet. This will dislodge the inner retainer and let the handle slide back enough so you can grab the end retainer with a pair of pliers and work it off the end of the rod. You can then remove the handle and the inner retainer if you like. If you lose or break the retainer I use an old hammer spring to make a replacement. Cut about 1 1/4 to 1 1/2 coils off the end of the spring then spread it out by putting it on the end of a a center punch and forcing it open until it spreads to the size of a non overlapping ring. This is virtually identical to the factory CH retainers. I install them using the same block but with a smaller hole that lets the rod through but not the retainer. Works like a charm.

I like GOVTMOD's advice.
I was hoping that one of you had found a a tool like: http://www.mcmaster.com/#lock-ring-pliers/=7uafhf that would be small enough to get the ring off and back on without damaging it. However, I will give it a go. Thanks to all for your quick replies. dkn |
