Thumbs up New Sarco Build and Thank You!

I just wanted to give everyone who has submitted information to this forum a big thank you. I am just finishing up my first FAL build (or any build as far as that goes) and must say that all the information that I needed was right here. Before last week, I had never even field stripped an FAL and now I am just waiting for my locking shoulder to arrive so I can finish it up and see how it shoots.

In summary, I purchased one of Sarco's Brand New Kits and a Coonan Type 3 receiver. Also picked up a DSA H/T/S, gas piston and muzzlebrake as well as a Tapco SAW grip to make everything legal.

My notes on the build:

When the receivers didn't go together I wasn't surprised because I already knew about the extra pin in the Argy lower. A little work with the Dremel on the upper receiver fixed that issue and the receivers matched up perfectly.

The barrel timed perfectly to the Coonan receiver without doing anything and even though I read many comments about making sure to put the handguard ring on the barrel first, I still forgot it and had to take everything apart and reinstall it which was a little chilly as my vice is in an unheated garage.

Then on to the trigger parts. The DSA trigger and sear fit nicely, but I did have to remove a little material from the front of the hammer to clear the extra receiver pin. This was also an expected issue and nothing a few minutes with the Dremel didn't correct.

The trigger pull was a little gritty and around 8# so I pulled the parts back out did a little stone and polishing work, put them back in with a little hammer/sear grease and it is now a fairly crisp and respectible 5#. Did the safety checks and all seems good.

One item that I did not expect was that the rear sight was a little too high for the carrier and bolt from the upper receiver with the receivers together. A minute with the Dremel lowered the rear sight enough to clear and I also increased the peep hole a little.

I am now hooked and already trying to figure out where to get the money to do another.......

Thanks again for all the information.

Guess that didn't come out right. The problem was the back of the carrier hit the rear sight as I would try to remove it from the receiver. I only took a few thousands off the top of the sight and everything was good.

You just didn't make the notch in the upper big enough, a little more and the carrier would clear the rear sight.

I went slow and took only enough off to get the holes to line up and give me what looked like full travel. I guess I will have to keep that in mind for my next build, unless of couse I find that Argy receiver to go with the kit....
