Polishing out rough importer markings?
I've got an Imbel receiver. It has a very sharp looking Gear logo on it, but other than that all of the importers stampings raised the metal around the lettering. I don't want to get rid of the importer's information, but I do want to polish it down so that it is smooth and does not have raised edges. Anyone have experience with this? What would be my best option? Thanks.

I used a stone and oil on one. Another I used a diamond hone and patience, which was the easiest. I just laid the hone on the stamping and carefully moved it back and forth, which did very little finish damage around the stampings. I did not bring them all the way down to the work surface, just worked on them until they wouldn't pull cotton strands off Q-tip. Both times I was planning on refinishing so it wasn't a big deal when it came to possibly scratching up the area around the markings. If it was blued at the location, you may or may not have luck with cold blue. They both were stamped very deep, so I did not have to worry about making them too shallow. I have seen importer stampings on the barrel so deep that it constricts the bore in that spot. My buddy had a really nice 98K that the barrel was ruinned from someone getting overly excited with the stamper. You could feel the constriction when pushing a patch through the bore.

Copper strap and small ball peen hammer. Wail it. Copper comes off with bore cleaner, raised edges gone.
