Elcan specterdr or a Trijicon 3.5x35

I have a question for those of you in theater or has work there in the past, someone who has used this equipment in combat, do you prefer Trijicon or Elcan. What are the Pro’s and Con’s; I am building a LRB M25 rear lug M1a, (M14) which optics , Elcan specterdr or a Trijicon 3.5x35 red cross hair 308 ballistic reticle. I want something that works up close and out to 600 meter or beyond. tell what you use and why , what works and what does not.

2CL,

Never used a Specter Dr but have used a Specter M145 on a 240B and an M-14 in Iraq and I had an ACOG on my M-4. I loved the ACOG it was a revelation in markmenship. I think you will be hard pressed with either at 600 and beyond but at 300 and closer the ACOG won every time. Some folks said they prefered the red dots M68 Aimpoint upclose but even without shouldering my M-4 in 25M stress shoots I was nailing dead center with an ACOG and both eyes open.

ELCAN has huge eye relief more than the ACOG but I truly didnt notice when the chips were down. Again never used a SpecterDR and the 1 to 4 MAG switch might be usful but on the 2 way range I have a feeling most folks wouldnt dick with it until the shooting stopped.

My 2bits I'm no SF type but KISS (Keep it stupid simple) works in my book.

I work for Uncle Sam back in the 80’s Crew chief A10a, a reasonably save job, just before gulf war 1, never had any shoot at me in angry. I shoot from 20yards out to 600 yards at range. I want a good optic sight that will for this. The ACOG is American made, from what I hear they have good customer support. So I think I will buy an ACOG just have to figure which will come close to fill this needed. Any other points you can give me on sights for a M1a/M14 would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Your going to need a cheek rest or a stock that's adjustable. This is mounted on the Smith mount with Acog channel which was the lowest I could find.

Great looking stock JohnnyReb!

2 clicks low, as you can plainly see from JR's picture, the ACOG on an M14/M1A, even with a dedicated ACOG mount, is going to put the optic very high. The Elcan Spectre DR is going to be even higher. This is the problem with trying to mount optics designed for the AR platform on anything other than an AR, especially AR optics on the M14 platform.

I tried using an ACOG on my M1A and finally gave up. If you are dead set against some of the nice variable scopes that will mount much lower than either the ACOG or Spectre DR, have you looked at Trijicon's newest 6x48mm ACOG?

http://www.trijicon.com/user/parts/p...6&categoryID=3

Pricy, but still about what you would spend on the Spectre DR. Also, this ACOG is still going to mount much higher than a conventional tube optic.

Have you looked at something like the Schmidt & Bender Police Marksman II?

Best of luck.

I think the Elcan is more scope than you need. If you want a deal though, SWFA has a display model on there site for considerable discount.

I use a TA11E on my Fal, it works well and I've had hits to 500, not sure about past that, but I'd be willing to try with it.

Used one, a TA31 version I believe, in Baghdad 2003, on old m16A4. It also worked well, but seemed to set high for my taste.

Both hold zero when removed and replaced on the rail. Seemed tough and durable, I know the ne on the A4 took a beating and always worked.

To me its hard to go wrong with the ACOG, its just really pricey

I'm going with a TA11J308, red crosshairs. Seems like the crosshairs wouldn't obscure the target as much as the chevron or horseshoe reticles at longer ranges. Plus the red crosshairs have more contrast against natural background than the red or yellow.
