JC higgins model 73

Does anyone have any info on this rifle,it is in 3006,I can't find any information on it.Any help is appreciated.

J.C. Higgens = Sears & Roebuck

Being a bolt gun it was probably made by Stevens or Savage.

There is a website out there somewhere that has a list of all (well, maybe most) of the Sears model numbers/names compared to the manufacturers model numbers. I do not have the link handy but I originally found it with a browser not all that long ago.

Mostly, the Higgens guns bring a lower premium in resale, sometimes because they were economy models with cheaper furniture and sometimes because there are so many of the original models out there. The ones I've handled shot just as well as the originals did.

Years ago, Sears contracted with such firms as FN and Sako and others to build them firearms they could put their name on. Some of the Sears/J.C.Higgins/Ted Williams marked firearms are by quality makers and can be real deals as shooters.

A picture would help. Sears had 2 model 73's from what I see in the list, one was a Savage #73 which was a 22LR bolt, The other was a Winchester Model 70.

It is possible there are others not in that list, Sears bastardized lots of guns.

The J.C. Higgins model 73 was made by Savage. It is the same as the Savage model 73.

I don't think so... The Savage 73 is a 22LR.

I don't have the rifle to post a pic of it,it was a jc higgins model 73 in 30-06
with scope and ammo for $300.Would it be worth that or too high.

From the Numrich Arms Store/House Brand cross reference list I came up with this:

Store/Model/Mfg/Mfg Model #
Sears 53 Winchester 70

Look at the extractor. If it has a mauser claw then it will be a pre-64 Winchester Model 70. If it doesn't then it is newer than 1964.

To further complicate matters, The "Ted Williams"(another Sears label) 73 is a Model 70 as well.

If a Pre-64, it would be a good deal IMHO. Post 64 it would be OK.

A Winchester M70 bolt gun in any caliber should be worth $300 depending on condition. If it's built on the pre-64 action, all the better, add $200!

Sears has a confusing system for firearms. I have two barrels from J C Higgins Model 50 rifles and each has a different Sears number, 583.90 amd 583.98
