Tech Question

Gentlemen,

I recently purchased an Aimpoint CompM on one of these mounts...

http://www.gggaz.com/index.php?id=54&parents=69,70

Looking at the GG&G site they say that their back up iron sight is the "right " sight to go with when using their mount as it places the reticle in the proper place for a perfect sight/dot line up (A3 flattop with std. F marked m4 upper).

My question is,... if I don't want to pay $200,000 for a BUIS, aren't they all the same height from rail to peep hole centerline? I'd imagine there is a tolerance for manufacturing, so wouldn't any BUIS work in the application?

I know that it's a dumb question and yes, I'm ready for a stfu stupid****** from someone.

There's a gun and knife show here next weekend and i might just bring my calipers if I need to because there is a GG&G dealer there.

Ok. Enough with the poodle shooters.

Thank you for any advice you might provide.

I think that they are referring to the fact that their BUIS has a common centerline with that particular mount+optic combination, hence the cheekweld is the same. That is their selling point. If you have to revert to using your BUIS then at least the weapon shoulders the same and you won't have to readjust your head/eye.

Not all BUIS set up heights are the same. BUIS simply means Back Up Iron Sights and because they are made to go on any Picatinny rail system they can be used on a SIG or an AR or a FAL with rails etc. As far as I know, there isn't any mil-spec agreement on a common height.

Actually I just emailed them for some specs and they replied. Their sights are 1.5" from the rail to the center of the peep sight. I needed that spec because, I, too, am using an Aimpoint Comp ML2 red dot on a rail on my rifle. I needed a BUIS set up and needed to know the center of the peep so I could sight through the glass with iron sites if I wanted or the red dot failed.

I find that whole setup quite cool, actually; sighting through another scope!

Hope that helps.
