Mauser rebarrel ?

Anyone who has rebarreled a Bolt gun, can this be done without mucking up the finish on the receiver and new barrel?

Or is a local Gunsmith pitching a reblue job?

Thanks

Affirmative, it can. But the finish between barrel and receiver may not match, assuming the barrel is blued. If in the white, you'll need some kind of finish, unless you go stainless. Ron

The new barrel is already nicely blued and matches the receiver already. Just asking how much damage the action wrench and barrel vice can be expected to do on the finish. Don't want to do a reblue if at all possible.

Don't have Mauser tools, figgered on a local Gun monkey to do the job. If I can barrel an Fal or AR without marring the finish, don't know why a "pro" can't do the same on a Mauser. Did I mention that I hate "reblued" guns?

It can be done if appropriate care is taken, but there is always a slim chance it still can be damaged some, either by the barrel vise or the action wrench, and you have to understand that going in to the deal. It might could be touched up, but again , might require re-blueing to look right. If the blueing job is done right, you won't be able to tell much difference. Ron

Try using something like a piece of brown paper grocery sack or a couple business cards between the vise and barrel. That usually works.

Business or shipping cards are the best, but you still must use resin, and if you don't get the torque right on the barrel vise, it can spin and will mar the finish. Even the best run into that, which is why they refinish. Ron

if your talking about a deep polished blue with a hint of tasteful engraving (gold fill of course) and a presentation grade French walnut stock, it's gonna need a reblue to look right.

If your talking about almost any firearm that has actually been used (as in honest wear and tear), it can be done with out re-blue IF the guy is careful and takes some of the precautions above.

"Every man is responsible for defending every woman and every child. When the male no longer takes this role, when he no longer has the courage or feels the moral responsibility, then that society will no longer be a society where honor and virtue are esteemed. Laws and government cannot replace this personal caring and commitment. In the absence of the Warrior protector, the only way that a government can protect a society is to remove the freedom of the people. And the sons and daughters of lions become sheep."
