Would you buy a golok No 2?
I have been trying to find a Martindale glolok No 2 for myself for about two months. All I have found on the net is a bunch of people completely frustrated by a company that seems to have adopted the HK attitude towards American customers - YOU SUCK AND WE HATE YOU-
One of their distributors, Proforce, has a vetting process. You have to actually apply for the privilege of sending them money. Remember Steve Martin trying to get dinner reservations in L.A. Story.... that is what trying to buy a golok is like. I am kicking around the idea of importing 100 of them. I was thinking that I would buy the goloks, black canvas sheath with file pouch and file that fits. I honestly do not know if the black canvas sheath is UK issue but I don't believe they have anything else to offer except a black leather sheath which is definitely not issue. Sooooo, if the people at Martindale will actually condescend to do business with a Yank would you buy one of these rigs if they were priced at $50 plus shipping? At this point I have no idea how much they will set me back by the time they arrive in Minnesota or even if Martindale will sell them to me. Just trying to decide if this is worth the trouble. Sportsman's Guide has them for $65 plus shipping from the UK which means that they will probably be damn near $100 to your door. That is just stupid for a product like this. They should be twenty bucks but I doubt that it will happen for that. The SG link. http://www.sportsmansguide.com/net/c....aspx?a=370406 The Brits are so F'ing weird about sharp pointy things. I was actually on one website that was "trying" to sell big scary knives in the UK. They would not show pics of their products because big scary sharp things are politically incorrect in the UK. Gads, I sure hope that that is not our future.

BTW, trolling of my post is very welcome. If you know where these things can be had for less let me know. I just want one of the fool things with correct sheath and file. I really do not want to import 100 of them but it seems like it may be the only way.

Didn't U.S. Cav or Brigade Quartermaster have the Goloks available in the past 3 or 4 years? I could swear that the Cutlery Shoppe had them as well many years ago. I think I will check the first 2 I mentioned, since I did look at Cutlery Shoppe's site last night and they did not carry them.

Another scource, same outragous price!
http://www.gunaccessories.com/ProFor...esMachetes.asp On the plus side, I found my Martindale machete referred to as a No. 227 or Bolo. Mine is pretty old with leather sheath and a neat Croc on the blade.

US Cav had the jungle knife, something about the size of a K-bar but with a much thicker blade. Don't know if they had goloks.

Loink had the knives but not the correct sheaths. Martindale does not sell retail. The others either do not have correct sheaths or are the same stupid money as the SG offering.

I have a British issued Golok and quickly figured out why they call them tree beaters. Try a Tramontina:

Brian, why do you want a Golock? What is the big advantage? I'd be interested in one if you find a source. |

years ago I ground my dads old butchers machete to the same blade style. A few decades later it's still the best machete I have ever used.
I found them here www.anchorsupplies.com/accesspries.htm and have been wanting to get one and see if it's as stout as my old machete. |

Maybe one of you guys can help me on this.Back in '97-98' I got a Golok from sportsmans guide for like $40.bucks or so.Has a grip with four flush head rivets holding the wooden slabs on the handle. Also has a snap pocket on the front of the sheath for a sharpening stone. Came with a red grease,(wax?)' coating the blade. The OD nylon sheath has a reinforced metal mouth on the sheath and the support strap is sewn on the back of the sheath and runs up behind the grip and has the old "metal hanger " arrangement for attaching to a web belt.
My questios is...who used these? Was this military issue? Thing is very well built, tough, and with a bastard file you can put a pretty sweet edge on it. |

I believe that the Ironwolf product is the Asian rip off that is often passed off as genuine Martindale.
I want one because they are a broad arrow marked UK issue item. Thanks for the link, English Mike. I just bought one. BTW, I did ask Martindale to sell me a crate of 100. They ignored me. Others have had the same response from this company.

To reference the above post on the Sportsman's Guide offering from years ago, The knife was New Zealand issue. Bought one myself, and wished I'd bought a hundred! BTW, what kind of sharpener goes in the front pouch?

New Zealand ! Too cool! Thanks!.
As far as a sharpener for the front pouch...I didnt get one that had the stone so I'm not sure.Probably made by whoever made the sheath.A Lansky stone from one of their kits sort of fits. |
