bbl?

Gentlemen,

Why is the barrel often referred to as "bbl"? I always thought this meant bull barrel, like on some 1911's but on a FAL kit?

Silly question perhaps, if so, my apologies!

I believe it's because that's the abbreviation for barrels of oil, it seems to have been adopted as the abbreviation for any use of the word.
