Question About 5 Slot and 3 Slot Flash Hiders

Regarding 3 slot and 5 slot flash hiders on British L1A1s...

It is my understanding that the 3 slot flash hiders were used first when the L1A1s were being made with wood furniture, and then later on when the Brits went over to maranyl furniture the 5 slot flash hiders began to replace the 3 slot ones. However, I had thought I read somewhere (please correct me if I am mistaken here with this info) that 5 slot flash hiders had a tendency to crack, and over enough time and stress, many would start to split apart.

It was my understanding that due to this observed cracking and splitting of the 5 slotted flash hiders, later on it was common practice for a rifle that was turned in to an armorer for a replacement hider to have the earlier 3 slotted flash hider installed on it, since the 3 slotted ones did not have the problems with cracking or splitting.

So, first, can anyone confirm whether or not the 5 slotted flash hiders were indeed more prone to cracking, or if that was just internet lore? Also, as far as some of the 3 slotted flash hiders being used again later after the L1A1s had switched over to plastic furniture, is there truth to that as well?

Will an L1A1 flash hider work on a CETME?
Thanks,
Craig

No,it won't.The Cetme is threaded for 15 X 1 MM,while the L1A1 is threaded for 9/16-24 RH.

Strangest application for a L1A1 flash suppressor (5 slot) I have seen was on a scoped SKS (Chinese) rifle that had the front sight assembly removed.
