Tough Decision...
I'm just about to order my FAL and I've got a little money left to decide between a compact 1911 or a Garand from CMP. I already have a GI 1911 but have been itching for a compact. I'm thinking of the Garand for accuracy in distance shoots. I'm comfortable with the Fal carbine not being the gun for that purpose but it is a serious MBR from CQB to 100yards.
Tell me your thoughts. |

you can always get a 1911. I'd go with a Garand.

M1s got history and won't be made anymore. 1911s aren't going away any time soon.

I'd rather have an M1A myself so I would go with the 1911. Kimber!

Very good...
Thanks for the input thus far! Newton, I don't have that much extra. I can get the Garand for 500 to 600 bucks and 240rds for <$100. I used to drool over M1A's but it was replaced by the FAL. I think the Garand and GI 1911 fit is good!

Decisions
Depends on what you really need versus what you already have or can afford.
The Fal carbine if new can reach out to 300 yards with the proper optics and some decent ammo . The garand that CMP sells are all surplus weapons that have seen their better days, So unless you luck into one that has a decent barrel as in Throat/muzzle erosion I would buy the Fal carbine as most combat scenerios are with 100 yards and the Fal carbine can be used for CQB also. Or are you talking about how the production of the Garand has come and gone?An M1 carbine is less than a Garand and tons of fun to plink around under 200 yards. Ammo can sometimes be hard to find. I'd go with a Garand as compact handguns are not all that fun to shoot for extended periods of time IMO. Unless it's a .357 snub nose or a Glock 29 (joke). Oh, and I love that ping. And 8 rounds of 30-06 ammo at your fingers. And it's awesome. ![]() Or save up some bucks and find a Tokarev Svt 40. 10 rounds of 7.62x54r in one of the best looking rifles. Sorry, I have an affection for WWII era rifles.

You only need a pistol to fight your way to your rifle. Rifle is #1, pistol second.
