just want to know if there is a parts diagram of the l1a1 out there on the web somewhere that I can look at to figure out where the c-clip goes on my front end

Behind the gas regulator, in the groove before the raised ridge at the rear of the gas block.

the clip holds the gas regulator on. have the legs down with the feet pointing back to the receiver. make sure the feet are sitting un a recess not on a high point.
