WTK: does bipod affect accuracy?
Just read this months article in SAR on AK accuracy. Amazing what difference it makes with muzzle break compared with the slanted break, and even more so with a fixed bayonet. What affects would adding a bipod on a light barrel FAL be? Any one done any tests with and w/o? Thx

It's funny that you asked this when you did.
I was just about to post a thread similar to WEG's "How accurate is your FAL" one on this exact subject. I've found that it can be an aid, if used correctly. I've also discovered that if you use it by just dropping the feet onto a benchtop & blazing away the exact opposite is true. Either way your point of impact will be different from the one zeroed without the bipod. |

I just read that article, and while it support some of my experiences, I think the group sizes were too small and perhaps the range (50 yards) too short. In all, the article simply didn't have enough data for any meaningful conclusions.
I really don't care what the best three round group is. I want to know hte extreme spread on 20 or 40 rounds. Thats more likely to reveal something statistically significant. I have also seen an improvement in accuracy with something other than the slant brake. The slant brake may be effective in its designed function, but it appears to be a negative (albeit slight) in accuracy. But its a ttrade-off. With handloads, a muzzle nut, and a red-dot, I've seen my off the shelf AKs shoot sub moa (three 5 shot strings) at 100. I firmly believe the weakest link in the AK accuracy is the ammo - not only the quality of the surplus ammo, but the basic design of the bullet. I think the author had a good idea, he just didn't take it far enough to be truly usefull.

Changes my zero by at least a foot at 100 yards on my STG.

I don't remember who posted the suggestion of leaning the legs a bit but I tried it and was able to hit what I was aiming at.
YMMV |
