looks like a water cooled Browning crossed with a bazooka and a touch of Barret 50 cal thrown in for good measure. When is the civilian version slated to hit the market??

"The weapon costs about $25,000 each, but experts were quick to point out that a fully-loaded M4 for optics and pointers costs pretty close to $30,000. Each ATK-made 25mm round costs about $25."

I have to stand back and question any article in which "experts" claim an M4 costs $30,000

M4 itself is only like $600, I beleive the extra $$ comes from the "optics and pointers". Not sure how much a PEQ-4 costs, but I've seen non-IR civ versions running several $k.

Brains are what really makes this Buck Rogers gun work -- it has them. The weapon combines a thermal optic, day-sight, laser range finder, compass and IR illuminator with a fire-control system that wirelessly transmits the exact range of the target into the 25mm round's fuse before firing.

Bet that'll really hold up in sandstorms, or when dropped down stairs, onto a concrete floor, all that. What happened to the LAW?

Meanwhile, the bad guys shoot back with a 1960's RPG-7 with no electronics at all, and kick everyone's ass.

Great.

The top part of that goofy, oversize, overweight combo assault rifle, grenade, smart munitions weapon the Army was looking at apparently got a dramatic size reduction and went from 20 mm ? up to 25 mm ?

I wonder if THIS version will work ?

They dumped a ton of money in the other version and didn't even get to keep the gee-whiz plastic HK that made up the detachable assault rifle.

A bit OT and maybe a bit trollish - but rather than the term "poofterpup" I think the term "Bullpoofter" is better. I see no reason to remove the word "Bull" from "Bullpup" - but maybe that's just me.

They should develop a "dumb" version of the round that arms after 15 meters, mount an aimpoint on a swivel mount for distance ranges, and put it in every rifle squad. Screw the electronics, just keep the big boom. A beehive round would be nice, too.

Best,

Meanwhile, let's continue the thirty-year-plus legacy of paying HK to develop things that are never fielded, but that HK is paid lots and lots of money to show promo videos of how amazing it will be.

The Pentagon could have a Museum of HK Abandoned Expensive Projects, now.

HK XM29

The idiot that wrote the article is blowing gas out his six. The weapon is called the XM29 and the electronics package is made by ATK electronics division, Same corporation that came up with the 25mm ammo. The electronics package failed at Ft.Greely Alaska in Artic warfare test chambers and froze up at zero degrees badly. The 25mm round cost 75.00 each from ATK. Piss poor reporting should get this person a job as a congressional fag boy aid. Got the news letter last night from military.com and the report that reporter wrote up about the Fn-Fal was a joke just like some of the magazines the clown writes for. To think they pay these clowns for writing stuff up and can't get the info correct the first time, Guess they haven't learned about proof reading their report before going to press. So much for college degrees and what they teach these idiots today in college. But like the old saying still applies, YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR! Those who do have college degrees OR TRADE SCHOOL DEGREES AND know what your paid for, I say KUDOS TO YOU, AND GODS SPEED IN A SUCCESSFUL CARREER. BUT the press and politicians are as about as useful as tits on a BULLFROG these days.

Not meant as a flame at you. Sorry if it came out that way.

I just thought the 'bull' in 'bullpup' was the most appropriate part of the term.

I am all for weapons development, and getting the best equipment into the right hands....but it just seems like the government's kneejerk solution to every problem is technology.

Soldiers win wars, not the newest toys. 'Shock and Awe' cost a lot of money, and we still had to have boots on the ground. I wish the leadership in the country would try impressing our enemies with our resolve, and determination to win rather than having cooler toys.
