So... where do I go?

Okay - here's the deal. I am not active duty military, nor am I
an 'on the job LEO'. I's just an old retired fart who enjoys
collecting nice things.

I want a good auto knife. I'm not asking about those cheap
"Godfather Stilletoe's"available in so many of those 'Great
Deals!' catalogs - I'm looking for something from someone
like Microtech or at least Benchmade. Quality stuff. Most of
these guys claim their stuff is just too good for the common
folk and will only sell to LEOs or active Military. I need to
find a dealer who believes regular folks have needs too.

Anybody have a link to one? Please?

I've been buying from this outfit for years, and they never asked if I'm LEO/Military:

You can also go here for private sales:

I bought this at a gunshow......dealer said I "looked" like a fireman

I don't dare carry it, if I was to be apprehended I would loose my right to have a firearm in this State. They dayum handi to have in the field though. Hanging from a tree stand, comes to mind , real quick!

I carry it around the house and at the cabin, though

I like those Bokers myself, they are quality made, even though in SC you are not allowed to carry a knife with a blade longer than 2 inches.

I know some states have some pretty bizarre restrictions.
Is that requirement for ANY knife ? Fixed blade, folders, auto or switchblades ?
How about a combination tool with a knife blade over 2".
Like most Leatherman, Gerber, etc. ?

Vermont doesn't allow switchblades, but I've seen auto knives offered for sale.
I'm not sure I would want to try to explain to Vermont law enforcement why I THINK it is legal here.

I am not suppose to carry anything with a blade over 3" BUT...A hunting knife is OK unless I intend to harm someone with it.

Illinois Law

Illinois Criminal Code 720 ILCS 5/24-1. Unlawful Use of
Weapons. (a) A person commits the offense of unlawful use
of weapons when he knowingly... (2) Carries or possesses
with intent to use the same unlawfully against another, a
dagger, dirk, billy, dangerous knife, razor, stiletto,
broken bottle or other piece of glass... or any other
dangerous or deadly weapon of like character...
- 720 ILCS 5/33A-1... A person is considered armed with a
dangerous weapon... when he carries on or about his person
or is otherwise armed with a category I or category II
weapon. (b) A category I weapon is a [firearm or] a knife
with a blade at least 3 inches in length, dagger, dirk,
switchblade knife, stiletto, or any other deadly or
dangerous weapon of like character.
- 720 ILCS 5/24-1. Unlawful Use of Weapons. (a) A person
commits the offense of unlawful use of weapons when he
knowingly: (1) Sells, manufactures, purchases, possesses
or carries any... knife commonly referred to as a
switchblade knife, which has a blade that opens
automatically by hand pressure applied to a button, spring
or other device in the handle of the knife, or a ballistic
knife, which is a device that propels a knifelike blade as
a projectile by means of a coil spring, elastic material,
or compressed gas...

Illinois Case Law:
- "Possession of hunting knife is not a crime; however,
knowingly carrying or possessing dangerous weapon with
intent to use same unlawfully against another constitutes
offense..." (1982)
- "Weapon not listed in statute can become "dangerous weapon"
when it is used in a manner dangerous to well being of
individual threatened, and knife with blade less than 3
inches in length can be dangerous weapon if used in such
manner." (1991)
- "A straight-blade razor did not constitute a per se
dangerous weapon, for purposes of armed violence
charge..." (1987)
- "Walking cane, even if not per se dangerous, was...
transformed by defendant's usage into a dangerous weapon."
(1977)

if you need a fast opener and don't want to go the switchblade route, check out the new spring-assisted openers. In Colorado at least they are legal and are as fast as a switchblade. There is no button, the blade has a hump on it atop the handle. You flick it and the blade flips open fast. I hope this idea catches on with a larger variety of quality blades- I use my clip- pocket knife a LOT and its open one-fingered before I can bring it into play. Neat idea, works, not a gimmick.

I saw the spring assisted next to the fast blades. Yes they are about as quick, much easier one handed. I like them but the offer for the switch blade....I could not refuse

Arkansas, thank goodness, doesn't say I can't have an auto.
Our laws seem to have more to do with intent than with
mechanics. It's just that manufactures such as Benchmade
or MicroTech don't want to sell to non-military or non- LEO.

That's why I'm trying to find a supplier/distributor/dealer who
will.

I have one of the Benchmade assisted openers. It's a nice
knife and it is quick opening! My biggest problem with it is -
I'm a lefty and its pocket clip isn't ampidextrious (which I
didn't realize when I ordered it, but that's my fault.) I'd
Really like a MicroTech OTF. But I ain't found nobody to sell
me one. Yet.

Thanks for the responses, guys.
