Oregon FAL shoot 12 & 13 September

That's right - you missed it!!

Ate the state's best BBQ at Toni's on the east side of Prineville. This place kicks ass.

Drove for an hour east up into the Ochoco Nat'l Forest. BFE. Sun went down, but it was clear, light, and warm. Almost full moon that looked like it was within arm's reach. Made it light like daylight until we went to bed around 1:30 AM.

Got to the reservoir. Set up tents. "Huh..." was operative word. "Don't go home with a bloody penis" was the best advice of the night. I offer you the same advice here, now. Campfire in big stone fire ring. BS-ed for a long time. You know the drill.

It was cold. Breath froze on the therma-rest. Well below 32*. Beautiful, clear night.

Woke up at 7:30 AM. Went fishing. Couldn't stand the boredom, and cooked breakfast. Someone who will remain nameless caught a trout. Not huge, but delicious anyway.

Went and set up a steel target course of fire. Pics later. Many guns were shot, many steel bad-guys lost their lives. The following firearms were tested, shared, and generally loved:

Glock 17
Baer .45
Hungarian AK(s) with the coolest flash-hider/combo device. Custom done by Rich
Hesse FAL - it shoots and works very nicely
Belgian copy FAL by G2 here on the files. It is smokin', and everyone killed the 240 yard cowboy with it almost everytime they pulled the trigger
Home-brewed Imbel FAL that is super accurate
S&W 686 4" barrel
Tokarev pistol which All FAL hit the 12" gong at 180 yards with more than once
Saiga 12 w/ H&K front & rear sights. Pistol grip & folding stock conversion
Blaser custom bolt-action rifle in .270 - Sweet with a capital S
Kel-tec .223 pistol - concealable hell-raiser

You coulda been there, and we wish you had been. Here's hoping more people make it in November. Pics later.

Peace.

Our inimitable host kicking steel cowboy ass at ~240 yards. Target was 24" 'cowboy-action' target. JDHD Junkie is spotting (didn't need to call anything but 'hit'...), and the Big Ranch (not its real name) is in the distance.

And, just in case you think that 'small group' meant 'small fun' or 'small food prep', you should be alerted to the fact that Saturday morning we had oatmeal, fresh trout, fresh scrambled eggs, sausage, toast and/or biscuits and jam, coffee, and Coke (or Dr. Pepper). All done right on the fire in cast iron. Good vittles was only one of the reasons for all the good shootin'.

Maybe you all will consider coming along next time. With love, and

Peace.

Oh, and one other thing that was cool...

Friday night we set up JDHD Junkie's Zeiss spotting scope and not only checked out the moon, which was almost too bright to look at, but we also saw several planets around Jupiter. So dang cool!! Night was clear and perfect.

Hey, ggiilliiee -

I was hoping you could make it, but maybe another time. What are you talking about? Shooting prone is bad? I run pretty fast, but I'd rather be laying down with a rifle than running around in front of a guy prone with a rifle.

But that's just me - YMMV

Peace.

Um....NO...I dint catch sh_t! When you have a rifle and rounds waiting, fishing's just a tad boring in my book. My lack of angling success MIGHT have had something to do with the logging cable I was using for line...I forgot to get the 15lb replaced before the trip and I swear I could hear the fish laughing at me every time I threw it into the water.

(and just cuz you couldn't be there Ron, don't be gettin' all jealous and pissy ' bout me "strayin" from what you and I share)

Dang it brunop....I specifically said..."DON'T make me look fat in any of the pictures." Apparently, SOMEONE just HAS to use the "wide angle" setting on their camera or they just won't be having any fun. Next time, I check the settings before ANY photos of me are snapped.

(jeez....a guy retains a little water and everyone's got to notice)

Oh, and a big thanks to All Fal for the hosting and to brunop for handling the chef's duties Saturday morning and for bringing out the steel...again. I'll bring some target stands for some silhouette's for anyone who'd like to check some grouping. (no Ron...not "groping"....GROUPING...you're a savage with a one-track mind)

I for one, am sure hoping we can get right back to that same spot in November. With any serious rain beforehand, that "road" might get fun in some spots but I've got a winch...and a lack of fear and common sense when 'wheeling, so we by God, WILL get out there!

Hehe,Talk about fat!!! I could cover multiple grenades with my fat AZZ.

Gillille, running on the ground up there will quickly cause a twisted or broken ankle, and ya should have come, we will even let you lead us in the runnin and gunnin, if ya ever show up.
As for the new guys that didn't make it, wish ya had, Maybe in the future?

We had a short break as some antelope ran thru our target area. Its easy to get an nice deer with a bow where we were, there are wild turkey's too, besides us..lol.

We all had a great time, my only wish was to have more time to show the guy's some more sights in the area.
Thanks to all who showed up.

I was thinking the same thing - any real running on that ground was going to lead to somebody having arthroscopic knee surgery. That or shooting themselves in the head as they fell to the ground with their finger in the guard.

ggiilliiee - you gotta show up and pull the trigger a few times with this group - good buncha guys. And shooters, too.

I'm pretty sure that I'm scared of shootin' 1911s against you. Add that to the first two rules of combat:

1) Never, under any circumstances, return mini-gun fire

and

2) Never engage Pluskat from 300 yards if he is standing with a Mosin or one particular Rich-built AK...

Nice shooting yesterday. Maybe the water-retention helped?

Peace.

brunop,

methinks you missed WHO my challenge was aimed at...ggiilliiee started this by slingin' some good-natured crap our way 'bout our "shoot" so I'm a slingin' it back over the hill.
(if I piss him off enough he just may show to save his honor...whatever works to get him out with us)

Besides....you were bangin' the steel impressively yesterday with Mr. Baer's product!

Check out this link...my 9yr old daughter can hum the tune and never misses throwing in....on time...in tune...."Cuerno de Chivo"!

No, I didn't miss it - I was just saying that you were right:

Quote:
him be's a'scared of not hittin' nuttin' compared to all of us
and that I was scared, too. I've seen that 1911 in action, even though you were too busy to shoot it yesterday. And I'll stand by the 'never engage (or flip-off) Pluskat inside of 300 when he's standing around with a rifle...' rule I made up last time I saw you shoot the Mosin.

I can't wait for November. I hope I don't have to have you put the winch on my rig .

Peace.

Ok brunop, I'll wade into the backslappin' fest...

Truth be told, I WAS about to pull a box of shells outta the Jeep for the 1911 (one of my few remaining boxes) and then I saw you working on the steel with your 1911. I hate to admit this, but I was reluctant to have you outshoot me with our pistolas and you sir, WOULD have shot better'n me! Your hit ratio was near 100% and it was clear you had command of the weapon. I haven't been shooting my .45 in some time and the ramp up would've exceeded my available rounds.

(I'm a lowly worm for my petty competetiveness but I'm trying to redeem myself here)

Take it for how it's meant...You were definitely the man on the trigger and I was a coward. Oh, the shame...

On another note, if you haven't already, I'd recommend recommending to your Dad that he give his air cleaner some attention. I cleaned my K&N today and got lots of the Prineville terrain out onto my drive. There were spots on that "road" that were like talcum powder and it got into everwhere on the Jeep.

Is it November yet?!?!?!?!?! I can't wait either. I feel so....so....rejuvenated after a weekend like this. It doesn't hurt that that kinda country is right up my alley. If I had some way of finding work over there, I'd bag this liberal-assed valley and move my squad over the hill and never look back.

I'm planning on taking all of Friday off for the next shoot and getting over there a lot earlier. I'm still thinking I'll come home Saturday night cuz having Sunday off to look forward to really seems to extend the weekend. Since I'm old and fragile, I may even take a little nap on Friday after setting up camp so I'm good and ready for an extended campfire. Maybe we can even sing some good campfire songs....like....um.....Cuerno de Chivo?!?! (or not)

That breakfast was a hit. Thanks again to All Fal for the bratwurst and you for the eggs and cook'n. I'm planning on bringing the small ice chest next time and some contents of the grocery store in town. (the freeze dried stuff was ok...but the brat's and eggs were much better) A little more afternoon fishing on Friday might help with the breakfast variety on Saturday.

Anyway, I can't wait.

We are going to need some hot vittles in November. I predict cold - don't forget that Global Cooling is upon us. Seriously, now, Oregon State Climatology forecasts a mild, short winter, but the Farmer's Almanac calls for colder/harsher winter. Don't forget to tell all the tree-huggers in Eugene that 2007 was flat for average temps, and that 2008 is colder than any year in the last 20...

Anyway, I'm with you. Get there early Friday. Shoot both days? Or hike Friday and look around? Home Saturday night is good. Gotta get the kids (and myself) to church.

I'm thinking that ggiilliiee is right about having a 'shoot'. I was thinking something 'shoot' like in the summer, but we only had three shooters. If we get a few people in November, I'd like to do something like the Military Rifle Shoot that they have in South Carolina - bring some different steel (silhouettes) and set up a timed event or two. Competition makes the use of skill interesting. It would also motivate me to practice a little bit beforehand. And make sure the rifle was sighted in...

More on this topic later, but not too much later, as I'm planning on buying some 'popper' type targets for the good of the order. Now if we can only get ggiilliiee to show up...

Look's like vagabond and sportsnut are going to have some catching up to do, and Nate how's it goin???
So, ya want a more competitive shoot ? We can go that route, and have it maybe at the coast, or in eastern Oregon? Really, we can do whatever the collective decides. I'm open to any ideas, even from those who have never gotten to know us by comming to a shoot, for me the best part is getting to know you gentlemen and connecting around the state.

I know that I will be stepping up my para build as I need a very accurate FAL and the Hesse XX Matchmaster supreme is goin to get the works also. Brunop clued me in to the mag followers needed for my PLR to function A1, thanks bro.

The ammo situation is going to change soon, lets all get together for some group buys, no sense in running low, and skipping out on weekend shooting practice, which I need more of.

Pluskat, yeah bro, I know we all feel better to get outdoors and do these important activities which revive our spirits, heck, just getting out overnight did me wonders.

Maybe someday the GGilliiee will show up.. Hehehe

I know, sometimes life can be brutal. Work, football, scouts, vacation, wife and life in general. The only one i would like to give up is work !

You guys know I'm there if at all possible. Unfortunately these last two dates just couldn't work for me.

Sportsnut -

I'm on for lunch. Wanna meet downtown somewhere? I think that Vagabond is trying to make it three. Where do you want to eat?

Peace.

How about a get together at Big Red's on the 26 and Skyline ?

Oh Sh*t. I forgot. I moved from Portland to Austin Tx. Really miss the Tri-County gun club. Hubers Spanish Coffee. The 24 hour Church of Elvis.

Oregonians exported to other places make those other places better. Austin's a pretty good place anyway.

Peace.

Yeah , I deleted it. Brunop and I figured it out over the phone. Me Brunop and Vagabond met at Red Robin for some tastey burgers and fries. Vagabond didn't eat, as he is watching his waistline.

Yeah, Body Image, I hate to see Vagabond on calorie restriction, he's trying to eat as if there is no food. I'm sure he will whip his weight problem.
