Black bears on the move
Not too many years ago they were restricted to the Smokey Mountains. Now there's been a few sightings outside Nashville. Wonder how long until the soccer moms cry foul because their poodle Fifi got eaten and bear season can start.

August 2007, they where poking around the training areas on Fort Drum - passed within 200 meters of where we'd set up a position.

Seen a few on my property in E Ky. They seem pretty harmless, really scared of people.

I had a mid sized black bear in my driveway last night. Dog starts barking like hell at something outside. Grabbed my p226 9mm with a streamlight light on the rail, and took a look. Our garage's mechanical door was open, so I just open the door from the house to the garage and looked outside. Sure enough, there was mr bear, munching on our garbage. I shone the light in his eyes, and he took off running. Its my own damn fault though for leaving the garbage outside.
That's the first bear I've seen this summer, but in years past we've had plenty of them. Black bears have about as much in common with grizzlies as pigs do with wild boars. Blackies are pretty docile, and non confrontational. No doubt the suburbanites will be terrified of the man eating monsters hunting their children. |

This picture was one that I posted some time ago. A boar and sow were down to get a little sip from our bird bath. When I stepped out the back door, they both just walked away. I do shoot visiting bears but only with plastic/rubber buck shot and never hit them anywhere but in the rear end.
![]() This little fellow was here just a short time ago also for a drink. Damn but they sure do like that bird shit water.

My BIL came across mama and 3 cubs near Hendersonville NC, he got them 2 nights on a game cam then bumped into them last weekend.
I don't know the stats or regularity but he was excited. |

I had them in my garage twice this summer in Colorado Springs. Luckily no damage. One managed to get into my trash on trash day despite the multiple bungee cords. I've been dousing the can with ammonia lately on trash day...so far they've left it alone but we'll see.

EBRfan. I live about 125 miles South of you. We have had twelve bear sightings here on our place within the last month and half. No damage -so far. If they don't find anything to eat here, chances are that they won't make our place one of their REGULAR stops.

A friend of mine was once "attacked" by black bear. It tore open her tent in the middle of the night, and pawed her around. Once it realized she wasn't sleeping on a bed of cheeseburgers, it just left. She had a couple bruises, but that was it. Not saying black bears never attack people, I agree it does happen, but that story sounds a little suspect. A black bear could kill a kid with one swipe of his paw. |
