Mayasian, FNM Port, South African, Radway or Hert.? Sugestions?
Looking at buying a few cases.. I know this has been asked and debated often, but I find no conclusions or at least that I'm not aware of.
Mayasian: CAI $209, Ammoman: $245 FNM Portuguese: AIM $149, Ammoman: $179 South African: AIM $126, Ammoman $179 Radway: CAI $150, Ammoman $99/400 rds, CheaperthanDirt $199 Hert.: AIM $169 (Ammoman includes shipping) I know there's one amo to stay away from, I can't remeber if its the Chilian stuff or Mayasian.. or something different. Any sugestions?

I have had good success with CAI recently buying Radway Green 7.62 X 51 Ball at $129.00 per thousand rounds delivered. Call Steve Carson, he's the rep that I have been dealing with.

After the shoot Sat. I contemplated asking to see if any KC shooters want to go in together on a large purchase. CAI still has RG 7.62x51 and SA PMP 5.56 for 129/ case delivered. I am leaning towards the Hirtenberger though.

I was going to buy at least a case. Do you think there are discounts on larger orders?
I always thoguth RG was underpowered. I coudl go for the Hert though unless the other Protugese was just as good. Let me know if you discover discounts on larger orders and it only makes sense to go in on it.

Bruce: the one to stay away from is Chilean. It repudedly explodes in the magazine.
I have shot CAVIM, Venezuelan, in my FAL with the only downside being it is somewhat dirty in 308. The CAVIM 308 will bring a G3 to a halt in about 6 rounds. CAVIM 30-06 is another story. It is a swell buy and safe for M1s and other semiauto and bolt guns. We tested the linked and it is low pressure enough for semis.

Hirt, Hirt and more Hirt. Great ammo, IMHO. Clean, consistant and dead-on.

I have been shooting the SA stuff from AIM and it seems to be fine and it's pretty affordable.

I prefer the Radway Green for use with original inch-pattern barrels or for other Commonwealth equipment [Bren; L42A1 sniper's rifle] with the barrel twist and configuration meant to be used with the 144-grain bullet of the Radway Green and Malaysian L2A2 ammo fairly available at present. As noted, it may require opening the gas adjustment one position further, and metric-pattern FAL sights may not be spot-on for the trajectory of the Brit ammo.
The Hirtenbirger ammo has given me very acceptable results, and I hope to be giving some more a try shortly after a certain Christmas present gets delivered. Something else worth trying if you can find it, though at $1 per round or so, it's not exactly *plinking* ammo: the Remington .308 Accellerator cartridge, with a 55-grain .224 bullet in a .30 caliber sabot. These little jewels move out at around 4000 FPS, though lately, it's been the .30-06 version that's turning up on my local gunshop ammo shelves. -archy-/-

Unless your CAI rep is cutting you special deals, the RG special ($129/k) is now over. I called them last Monday to get a case, but it was now $149/k, delivered (Still agood buy, BTW). I had passed on a case of RG for $145 at a gunshow 10/14. Picked some up today at another gun-show for $145/k.
Same vendor had Hirtenberger for $165/k, and battle-packed SA for $179/k. Thought about getting the SA (same $/rd), but the case was a mix of different manufacture dates ('78-83), so I stuck with RG. Also got some 1983 Hirtenberger 7.62x51 tracer rounds for $7.99/30 rds. Hope at least some of them actually light! JMc

The RG may seem less powerful but it is not. It is NATO mil-spec. If it was reloadable, for $130-150/1,000 delivered, it would be perfect, in my mind.
Hirtenberger at $165/1,000 delivered, or if you can find it at a gun show for that price, will give you reloadable brass cases for 1.5 cents each. It is as good as ammo as the RG, in my opinion, as is the Portuguses FMN. You cannot go wrong with any of those three, IMHO. BUFF

Wow! Thanks for all the responses. This helps me straighten things out.
Lesson One: No Chilean! (I'm releived to find this out) Lesson Two: RG would be best deal if I can get the super-duper CAI price. I've never shot RG before. Lesson Three: If no deals on RG it's a toss up between the other three. I've shot the Port and the Hert, but not the S.A. so maybe I'll buy one S.A. and one case of Hert just to experiment. Between the two, they average out to two cases of Port! [This message has been edited by Bruce J (edited October 22, 2000).]

today, 10/23/00 my brother ordered for me case RG-$129, case PMP $129, case of 1400 turk 8x57 mauser Corr, on strippers in bandoliers(great for those incredibly cheap mausers)$99.40, all prices are shipped (the shipping wt on 8x57 is 100lbs, if I remember right)
Bruce J-email me if you can't get CAI to deal with you, I am going to order more after I balance the checkbook [This message has been edited by cvl engr (edited October 23, 2000).] |

It's difficult to even post through these tears of regret...I COULD have afforded a few more cases 7 years ago. I really could have...

+1 on the time machine, had I known $45 on a SA battle pack would become a screaming good deal I would have bought the guy out.

I remember somebody posting a few years ago that we were in the good old days of ammo and we should buy all we could. I did. But I couldn't buy enough.
Of course, one can NEVER have "enough" ammo. Groucho

Yep. At my first Phoenix Show I bought a green case of Portuguese .308 (I think it held somnething like 1200 rounds) for $159 and thought I got taken!
I was with panchop at another Show when he sold a few guns and used the cash to buy ammo. He bought 5,000 rounds of Portuguese in the wooden cases! I thought to myself that he was wasting his money because a gun lasts forever but ammo is gone as soon as you shoot it. I was over his house a month ago and he still had a few of those csses left! Just 2 of them now will equal what he apid for all 5 of them then! I wonder what we will be saying in the next few years? I sure hope it isn't "Remember when you could get .308 for only 50 cents a round?"!! azski
