Mossberg Barrel Lug Separation ( repaired)
I was at the range trying to work out some feeding and ejection issues that I was having with used Mossberg 500 ATP8 that I had picked up. I had put a total of 30 rounds through it on that and a prior occasion and was just switching to Aguila mini shells ( they did not feed well either). On reloading I noticed that the barrel lug had cracked and separated from the tube.
![]() ![]() I contacted Cust serv and it's all boxed up to go back right now. Has anyone ever had a similar problem? JR Last edited by Rotor; July 14, 2008 at 09:42. |

Are they GLUED together? What ever happenend to banding these parts together? Oh yeah...might cost an extra .25cents in parts..cant have that!
Its like with using PLASTIC...nothing feels more secure than steel...Sounds like you bought someone elses problem shotgun..the one that had 4,000 rds put thru it..if you want to remain with Mossbergs you may want to get a 590A1...got into mine for under $400.00..thats a home security 500 you have their..not meant to really shoot alot, mostly sit in a closet for 'just in case' scenario

actually your gun has been dropped hard or abused in some other way, which is why you have a perpendicular stress crack across the barrel lug. and thats silver solder, previous owner broke your gun, if your gun had come "unglued" it would not have broken in two pieces but clean a clean seperation of the barrel and lug, did they use it as a battering ram on a solid wood door to gain entry or something?
the 500s are great i got thousands of rds threw a pair of my own, a 60s model western auto brand marked one and its silver soldered there too, they have made this this way for decades, you bought a broke gun, and the 500s were made tough. Model 500 is the only shotgun to pass the US Army's Mil-Spec 3443E test, "a brutal and unforgiving torture test with 3,000 rounds of full power 12 gauge buckshot". (The updated 3443G specification requires a metal trigger guard, so only the Model 590A1 variants, which have a heavier barrel and use metal trigger groups instead of the standard Model 500's plastic trigger groups, will fit the requirements.)

re:
I agree, the 500 will take all kinds of abuse and keep on shooting. Looks like someone used it as a battering ram. I have never heard about anything like that happening, and I feel pretty confident that if there was an issue with any of the Mossbergs doing that consistently, it would be on the net in a forum.
Mossbergs may not be particularly pretty, well decorated, but they are a great working shotgun tool. Trust me, when I need to use my shotgun to pry my fat arse out of a mud bog, I am glad I have my Mossberg and not my Berretta O/U. the great ting about them is you can use it pry you arse out of the waist deep mud, climb out and start shootin' |

I have to agree that if were a common problem there would be more examples of it occurring. Perhaps is was sexually abused by a prior owner. It sure wasn't those last two Aguila mini shells.
![]() ![]() ![]() It just went back to Mossberg this week. I look forward to reporting how fast and easy the replacement process was. ( fingers crossed) JR |

The Mossberg home security is not meant to be shot much Tell that to all of the hunters who have put thousands of rounds through them. You realize that the M500 home security and the M500 hunting model is the same gun with a different barrel lenght right? And I thought that the 590A1 is glued together on the front end also

This got me thinking.Maybe remove one and put it at the end of my 24 inch smoth bore slug barrel.with a tube that long, maybe it would hold 3 or 4 more 2.75 inch shells. Make a nice trench gun.

I just got it back from the service center in TX last week.
![]() They repaired the original barrel, replaced the trigger group, extractors and put in a new safety. I had a chance to put a few boxes through it over the weekend. All function problems vanished. It now lives up to the Mossberg reputation. They did charge me $60 for the repair and all. Fed Ex Ground actually delivered it on the third attempt ( shocker). I was a little surprised by the charge but not miffed. The shipping cost something. You can now say that you've heard of one that got worn out (though not by me). It doesn't look too bad. ![]() JR |

Damn....that's the worst case of hammer toes on your left foot that I've ever seen! javascript:smilie('
')500's are inexpensive, good, dependable shotguns. I have one that I've gone through, deburred and polished the bolt and action bars on. It is one slick working shotgun now!javascript:smilie(' ')

I suppose I should re-phrase that. I was hoping they would repair the gun at no charge.
