Ammo Question: Is this as good as it gets?
What's the best I should expect out of Radway Green or Hert. ammo?
When using this surplus ammo, how good as as good as it gets? I guess I want to know if it is futiel to me to fret and toil over trying to get tighter groups, or can I just stop and feel comfortable that the ammo and the rifle are at its limitations. The alternative, is for me to fess up and admit that I'm at my limitations of my shooting ability. The best I can do, seems to be three to four inch groups of 20 rounds, with maybe one or two flyers at 100 yards, and about a six inch group at 200 yards. Sure, I can luck out and do a three round group occasionally in under two inches. But this seems more random than planned. I beleive the real story plays out in 10 or 20 round groups. So am I at my limits or is the ammo and rifle at its limits? ------------------ Bruce J Kansas City BruceJ@fnfal.com

Those sound like very respectable groups to me. Especially firing in 20 round groups with surplus ammo out of an FAL.

Have you tried something like Federal Gold Medal or Black Hills match ammo in your gun? They're pricey, but you might try a couple of boxes and see how it groups with them.
Three-inch, 20-round groups out of a battle rifle with ball ammo ain't bad! ------------------ "Sometimes I wonder whether the world is being run by smart people who are putting us on, or by imbeciles who really mean it." - Mark Twain

Try Portuguise(spelling?) or S.African PMP or some of the German stuff NavyArms has. Radway is the poorest of the surplus I have shot as far as accuracy goes and seems to be of lower pressure.

Like the other posters say, try the different types of ammo. Each rifle likes some makes better than others. Mine likes Hirt better than other military surplus. Having said that, they are just military rounds. Match ammo will give better results regardless. Haven't tried black hills, but Federal or M852 military match ammo will give lots better performance.
With south african, FN,or German, I get 4.5 to 5.5 inch groups at 225 yards, with Hirt, 3.5 to 4.5 inch at 225, with match, 2.75 day in day out. If you can get it, try the M852 match ammo. Ammoman has it occasionally. |

CDNN has a sale on 20 rnd boxes of Federal Gold Medal Match, at just under $14/box. It's just about the most accurate production ammo available.

I've found the Radway to be decent and usually can hold this ammo off the bench in the 4" range at 100yds. The Portugese has proven slightly better for me into the 2" range. I would rate the Malaysian in the same catagory as Radway but seems to shoot a bit cleaner.

Dixie Ammo Dump is selling GAFALERS the excellent German Nobel 7.62x51 surplus for $138/1000 **DELIVERED TO OUR DOORS***! I've never shot any, but it has an excellent reputation for accuracy. I have a case on order. http://www.armthepopulace.com .

BruceJ-
Our customers are reporting, and our shooting experience shows that the South African is producing the greatest consistancies in velocities and groups of all the Surplus thats been on the market in recent years. We have sold contianers of everything out there and get ALOT of feedback from some very knowlegable shooters, especially Military and Law enforcment folks. Match ammunition in a FAL can somtimes but not always result in better groups. Rule of thumb is a FAL is a 2" rifle, a little better on a good day. You will find an inexpensive choice for match ammunition on our web page. We offer a 168 or 175 grain Sierra Matchking on Factory primed FN Nato headstamp brass which shoots under 3/4" all day long. I have had real good results with the Malaysian ammo from mid 80's productions. It is real consistent and very clean, as good as Hirten' or Port in my experience

Thanks for all the great feedback.
I'm wondering what the the hype was about the Radway Green, when the other stuff seems to shoot a little better. I bought several cases of the stuff, gee... i guess i gotta go shoot it all now before I can get some of the good stuff... ![]() ------------------ Bruce J Kansas City BruceJ@fnfal.com
