Portugese ammo any good?

What kind of quality is the Portugese ammo? I don't see much talk about it.

Would like some opinions on it if anyone has any experience w/ it.

Happy Blastin'

Dave-
Based on all the FN FAL and M14 shooters who use it, Portuguese ammo gets the nod for being the best of the surplus ammo available, although I'm sure Hirtenberger and Radway Green have their advocates. All three are excellent. Bt

Portugese FNM surplus is my favorite. I've gotten excellent accuracy with it in a variety of .308 battle rifles. I've just started shooting Hirtenberger, but I haven't gotten better results with it so far. The Portugese is starting to get harder to find,so don't hesitate if you want to get some.

The Portuguese .308 is true NATO spec 7.62 ammo. It comes in those olive-drab heavy vinyl 200 round battlepacks. It has the NATO circle cross on the headstamp, a crimped primer (berdan though) and a steel jacketed bullet. The headstamp date codes I've tried are 80-25 and 83-16 and functioning was 100% in an M1A and FAL. Accuracy is good, it's military ammo not match ammo. Bottom line : good stuff!

At the Costa Mesa, CA gunshow today I purchased (from a ammo dealer I consider reputable)some .308 ammo discribed as "Portugese surplus" Packaged in 20rd cardboard boxes inside a GI ammo can holding 240 rds, I later discovered that the boxes had been opened and retaped. The ammo is mixed with headstamps marked, 7.62H1 and 7.62HD. No Nato cross, and no date?? The brass is very shiney and has crimped primers sealed with a green sealant. Do any of you guys know what this stuff is??? Thanks Ray
