Heaviest weight bullet that will stabilize in a 1-12 twist

FAL barrel? The STG barrels are 1/12 twist, made for the 147-150 grain projectiles. But will they reliably stabilize a 168, 171, or even 190 match bullet? Anyone get satisfactory results, and if so, what was the load?

Thanks my brothers and sisterts of the FAL!

Hey Balming,
I hope this helps,... link to Shilen page that I tend to believe, but have very limited experience with. Certainly typical match .308 is one in 10 but 168's are said to run well out of the 1 in 12's. Here's the link.http://www.shilen.com/calibers.htm

Exactly what I wanted to know! It looks like I'll concentrate on the old standby- 168 grain BTHP, and push them on the fast side.

Thanks Dirtfarmer!

Balming...try the 175's. Shot some FGM 175 out of my 16" ARS, loved it.

I have corresponded with a guy who was shooting Berger 185 grain bullets through a 1-12" twist Remington M700 PSS. He had no difficulty stabilizing them out to 300 yards or so. I would think that this would probably represent the ragged edge, though, and may differ from manufacturer to manufacturer of both bullets and barrels.

The 168 and 175 grain Sierra MKs shouldn't be a problem in a 1-12" twist; they've been shooting the 168s through M14s for decades now.
