Chilean ammo
I heard that some of the Chilean surplus ammo sold about a year ago was no good and damaging rifles. Info from anyone?
Thanks ahead of time, Blaine |

I figured that you already know. But just in case, I'm inquiring about 7.62x51mm Chilean ammo.
Thanks, Blaine |

i bought 1800 rnds of the stuff last year. i've shot probably 400-500 rnds so far with no problems other than it was hot. i also tossed out about 50-60 rnds because of corrosion on the cases. i wouldn't get anymore though

I agree. I got the same crappy ammo as well.
Came in a huge wooded crate. Mixed headstamps. Wasn't a happy camper. But its just cannon fodder at this point.. |

A friend and I bought some chilean ammo and it did not look very good from the start. when we went to shoot it, my friend had a round blow apart inside the chamber.
I WILL NEVER BUY IT AGAIN, no matter how inexpensive it is. |

A similar question came up on the AR-15 forum. The answer was simply why would you spend a lot of money to buy/build a nice rifle only to fire the cheapest ammunition in it. Surplus ammunition produced in a national arsenal is one thing. The whole mixed headstamp thing appears to be something entirely different.
If you've had success with that stuff, then that's great. But just remember, it's your face that's inches away from 25 tons per square inch of pressure.

Mine came in 20 round boxes, all factory packed, all 75 headstamp. All junk.

So far the stuff I bought was 74 headstamp, shot about 150 rounds all surefire no problems. I bought more this was 73 headstamp. Will post if any problems occur. It seems the 75 headstamp is the problem lot. Ask Vicg1 he had some blown through cases. As for me no problems but am staying away from 75 headstamps.

vicg1,
What type of problems did you have? I bought a thousand rounds of the stuff about a year ago. I was finally going to shoot the ammo until I heard there were problems. I checked the headstamp. They're all marked "75." Thanks, Blaine |

The Chilean I shot thru my FAL was very very smoky and left fairly heavy deposits on the rifle considering only 50 rounds were fired and the rifle looked like it had fired about 500 rounds.
I've been buying Portugese and Hirtenberger and have no complaints or problems with either.

I've heard that the Portugese, Hirtenberger and Israeli ammo is pretty decent but I was also warned against buying Chilean by the salesmen at the gun shop where I bought my Steyr .308. They said that the Hirtenberger was actually some of the best stuff short of the US made Federal rounds and match grade rounds. Right now I'm shooting the Israeli ammo and I have been quite satisfied with it. I can't wait to see how the FAL handles it... (I'm on a waiting period for my FAL)
