ID: LC 96 w/ 1 purple and 9 ball
I aquired some interesting ammo in a trade recently. It is headstamped LC96 and consists of 1 purple tipped round and 9 ball rounds, on a belt of coarse.
What is the purple tip designating and what is the special use for this ammo? [ August 10, 2001: Message edited by: EMDII ] |

TM 43-0001-27 doesn't list a purple tip. But the new 'dim tracer' for use w/ NVGs and NVDs is not yet type-characterized in the TM, either. Could be?
Could it also be a badly faded black (AP) round?

Nope, not faded black. Definately purple.
The guy I got it from said it came from the 160th SOAR. Maybe special for them? |

I have listed for .50BMG dark blue - incendiary (M23) and maroon - tracer (M17).
Nothing for purple in 7.62X51 or .50BMG.

hey guys, I have an answer for you on the ammo, (I am a crewchief/doorgunner on blackhawks, spent some time on MH-60G in AF special operations and know some guys from the 160th SOAR Army Special Operations Aviation Regiment that fly the MH-60K)ok heres the deal, the purple is low light NVG tracer and it is 1-9 instead of 1-4 for use in the minigun(AF called them GAU-2 army calls it something else) the rate of fire in the mini is 2000 rpm low rate and 4000 rpm highrate(there are 2 trggers, both electric to control motor speed as this is how the mini works,by motor)the M-60D is standard door gun on H-60 aircraft and has only a rate of 550rpm and even at 1-4 will cause loos of NVG,so they went 1-9 for the mini, and still had some problems with NVG,then they developed the M80E1 flash retardant powder ball and the new lowlight tracer with the purple tip.I got conformation on this from a former 160th crewchief/gunner.good find! any other questions feel free to e-mail me.

I am thankful to everybody for the info! I like new information.
BTW, I have 59 rounds of this stuff, linked, 1-9, tracer on both ends. That makes 7 low-light tracers and 52 ball with low flash powder. I will sell it. What will you give? I love it when I get trade bait on accident! |
