Smithy question

Hi, any of you folks use one of these and are they any good for general gunsmithing work. I have the chance to pick one up for 2500 with the stand and tooling. It is a 2005 model. Since my buddy's Jet burned up I have been looking for a replacement. This would also have the mill setup which would be nice.

TIA for any advise.

Smithy

I have one and for small jobs it works ok.
The first thing you do each time you use it is check the oil. The Steel casting weeps oil so if it sets awhile it will be quite low.
The spindle bore is small and that slowed my turning of my .50 barrel.
The steady rest works much better if you replace the tips with small rollers.

On the plus side the chucks are much larger than the similar unit from HF.
It cuts well and I could afford to buy a used unit. I just could not afford the better and bigger units.

Good luck with it. I have learned a lot from using it.

Thanks for the info. I'll look into what tooling he has with it and go from there.

Have you ever looked at a ShopTask ? Looks like a smooth way of getting into home CNC by going manual first, then adding ball screws and then CNC kit (steppers not servos I guess).

http://www.shoptask.com/

The colour scheme is pretty garish, but once you get past that and look at the specs it looks pretty good, esp. for light gunsmithing. 17x32, MT5/MT3, R-8.
